Where to mount a BBQ

I just purchased a BBQ at the boat show in Toronto and now am not sure where to mount it. I was going to get the mount that uses a rod holder and use it on the side but now I'm wondering about mounting it on the rail at the back on the swim platform above the transom storage compartment. It's a small rectangular BBQ and the boat is a 2000 Vista 268. My concern is the width of the swim platform and will I always be running into it? Will I always be hitting it when accessing the swim platform? If I use the rod holder type bracket, could I travel with it in on average relatively calm days? It doesn't look like it could stay in the rod holder with the canvas up so that might be a problem on pour weather days. Advice please? Where are you 268 owners mounting them? I'd go experiment a little but the boats in storage.

We mounted ours on the swim platform under the ladder cover with a removable post mount kit. We store the grill in our rear storage when not in use. It's worked well for us so far. I can't seem to find any decent pics of our setup but here is a link to Wkearney99's install which is exactly how ours is mounted

We used a Magma removeable post and base mounted on the left rear corner of the swim platform of our 268 for our Magma Newport grill. The base is always visible, but the grill is out of the way enough to use the ladder while the grill is being used. I angled the grill about 45 degrees, but the grill can be rotated to other directions if desired. One thing I have experienced with the grill is that wind may blow out the fire. Sometimes an aluminum foil skirt around the bottom and held in place by the folded legs will help keep the fire lit. I have seen others mount the grill on the rear rail. l would recommend watching the heat and proximity to any canvas tops though.

Thank you both for your reply. You know, that's an option I hadn't thought of. I guess that's what this forum is for. Bliss36, I've actually read your entire blog and have looked at your pictures but could never figure out if you had a BBQ or where you mounted it. Did you put bolts through the swim platform or just screws? Also, Surface Interval had a good point, can the ladder be used when the BBQ is in place?

I did the same install as Ben did. It has worked perfectly so far. I probably had about $35 in the job and it took about a 1/2 hour to complete. I dont really have a good spot to store the grill beside the cuddy. But once we anchor up, It gets put on the post. Mine is mounted on the opposite end of the swim platform from the ladder.

Mine is mounted same as mentioned above. The base is screwed to the floor of the ladder well, and ladder still fits in nicely, and the door closes all the way. The grill can be put in place with the ladder stored, or out, but if you want it out, you'll need to set it out before mounting the post. You could certainly still use the ladder but it would be tricky getting out as you'd have to work around the post/grill and the lid for the ladder compartments lays up against the post when it's in place..

I got a Magma Cabo grill from Santa and am trying to figure out how to mount it without drilling holes.

I don't know why it wouldn't work, so long as you can get enough grip with that clamp to hold it place, and it not wanting to spin, or slide...

The bimimi mount worries me with how close the BBQ is to their canvas and seats, and those things get pretty hot!

Also, it looks a bit awkward to use, the bimimi pole is a bit in the way when accessing the BBQ.

This is exactly where I was thinking of mounting it, but this pic is of a kettle style grill. I don't see it being too close to anything mounted like this. Only worry is, like you said, the bimini pole being in the way. Anyone have a pic of a larger Magma grill mounted this way?

Here's a shot of our friends with the Magna grill mounted. They are ok with it, but we keep waiting for their boat canvas to burst into flames! It's much nicer to hang out on the nice big Fourwinns swim platforms and BBQ there IMO.

I think I'll give the bimini mount a try before screwing anything to the swim platform. If I had a bigger platform like on the 298 I'd consider the pedestal mount. On my small platform anywhere I mount it would be in the way.

Check out these images, we had a 2003 248 Vista prior to the 298 Vista and used the exact same mounting system. Worked wonderful, lots of room!
