Just wanted to pass on information that I could not find anywhere on the internet. I recently found oil weeping from the bottom of my oil pan (2003/268/5.7GXI/generator). The oil pan had corrosion between the pan and the adapter for the drain/dipstick. I researched this issue via the web and it appeared this is a common problem and I had two choices. Pull the engine and replace oil pan or use some type of sealant(COR-15) with engine in place. I could not sleep at night with a patch as I did not know how intrusive the corrosion was. I also do not have the equipment to lift the engine due to boat height. After measuring the bilge clearance and pan I went for it. Unbelievably, the pan can be removed! I did not even have to remove the starter. Just removed all perimeter bolts/nuts, dust shield at flywheel and bilge pump/float. The pan will just clear the oil pump and slide forward, it then can be turned sideways at front of engine and removed from engine bay. I am not saying it easy - but it can be done. I am 5'10", 185 pounds and bruised from elbows to my finger tips. Lessons learned - When reinstalling the adapter for the drain (banjo fitting) make sure you use new o-rings and washer. Apparently the washer is a crush washer and can only be used once. Wish I had known that little morsel of information before pouring 5.5 quarts of oil back in. If your pan is still good, please make sure you use some type of corrosion block. There is a small gap between the banjo fitting and pan (approximately 1/32") for moisture to attack the pan. With this being the lowest metal in the bilge, it appears to be great place for condensation to attack the stamped sheet metal pan. I actually sprayed three additional coats of paint on the new pan before installing for added protection. Volvo Penta $300.00 pan is not required, I ordered a new pan for a 1999 5.7 Chevy with no baffle for less than $100.00. Not sure I would tackle this again, but I can only imagine what the bill would have been at the shop. Hope this helps someone in the future and I apologize if it should have been posted in the ENGINE section. |

I would say NO...Just because the oil pump pick up tube goes to the bottom of the pan and is not flexible. If it is common is there a bulletin or recall from the dealer?? Sorry, does not sound like fun. |

I doubt there is a recall but a quick search of the net revealed many who have suffered this problem. The dipstick assembly had to removed also before the pan was dropped. |

Sure it's possible. Pull out drive. Unbolt motor mounts pull motor then proceed to pull pan. |

Apparently I was not clear, I was not asking if it is possible. I removed the oil pan with the engine still in the boat and just wanted to let folks know there is enough clearance to get it out of the bilge without removing the engine. Not everyone has access to a lift tall enough to accomplish the job. |
