Music in the cockpit

I have a new to me Vista 378 with the standard Clarion audio package. I can get the music to play in the cabin but I have not been able to get the music up to the cockpit. I feel like I must be missing a switch or something. Any Ideas?

Try the Fade setting on the head unit. If its set all the way to one end (front or rear) that happens. Sorry, thats just the first place to check and Im not sure if you did.

Do you have an external amplifier?
Do you have a battery isolating switch that totally removes power from the head unit?
Could be in the HU's settings...

My 358 has two head units. One for the cabin another for the cockpit. My old Sea Ray had 1 unit and cabin/cockpit was controlled by the fader.

Does your circuit breaker panel have one for the audio amplifier?

My cockpit audio is driven by the amplifier. Without power to that amp, there is no audio in the cockpit. The cabin speakers are directly wired to the head unit in the cabinet below my breaker panel. I have forgotten to flip on the amplifier breaker switch and been music-free as a result.

You don't say what year the boat is.. however this is a pretty known issue for certain Clarion Radios... if you have the stereo amp breaker on and there is still no speaker output try the following:

1. Press and hold the "title/adj" button for 2 seconds
2. use the "search" button to scroll through the menu until you find "SW LPF"
3. press the "Vol up/dpwm buttons until you see the word REAR
4. When you are done press the adj button again

Which clarion head unit? The XMD3, CMD4/5 or what?

The typical factory setup is to use the Rear channel line level signals from the head unit to feed a power amplifier. This is connected to the speakers topside. You'd need to confirm how yours it set up. I don't know where they put the amp for the 378.

Start by changing the Fader adjustment on the head unit to favor the rear channel. If you don't hear anything out of the cockpit speakers then start digging for the amp and make sure it's powered and that it's fuse AND breaker aren't blown/tripped.

But if a previous owner upgraded or changed something, well, all bets are off. The same basic troubleshooting still applies. Fade the speakers and start debugging what's wired to where...

It's often better to do this yourself first, because paying someone else to debug electrical issues gets expensive in a big hurry.

Hey Tim,

Did that trick work??? If it did make sure to write that down somewhere... your radio is the model before the "rear" input was the default. SO every time someone disconnects the house battery this is going to happen to your boat. This will become a spring routine for you. The next generation on clarion radios where made with the rear being the default setting.

Hi and Thank you, The last trick did not work. I have a stereo friend coming by tomorrow to lend his knowledge. I will let you know how it turns out. I hate to open a large subject but if you were going to change the unit what would you go with.

Alpine is the best but don't work with marine remotes. A high end Kenwood is just about the same and their automotive head units work with marine remotes

Yet for a lot of situations it's a much better idea to HAVE a remote. This keeps people away from other gear. Like not at the helm. Or in our boat that would be down in the cabin, behind a cabinet door. Without the ability to use a remote it would be very inconvenient to use our radio.

Besides, sound quality on a boat is pretty much pointless.
