Post subject:  How many duck bills?

I took apart my vacuum pump to replace the duck bills, expecting 4 of them. 2 on each side of the pump. I only found 3, 1 on the input side and 2 on the discharge side. I had the whole thing apart and couldn't find another.
Anyone else run across this? I want to make sure I didn't miss something.

Thanks,

Steve.

I have four duck bill valves in my Vacuflush. I have replaced them once. The manual and the Vacuflush Maintenance Kit show four. As you say, two on each side.

Shoot - I should have looked at that diagram while I had the whole thing out. I wondered if that nipple could be removed (part 15), mine did not have the 4th duck bill between the nipple and the pump, but obviously it's missing. Guess I get to pull it all apart again.
How would I go about removing the nipple without damaging the threads?

I can't remember having any difficulties taking that area apart. I had the duckbills in and out a number of times before I got the system working but this was nearly 3 years ago.
I found these step by step instructions with photos:

I can see a photo of the nipple but no mention of any problem with removing it.

My problem was that the system stopped working for no apparent reason. I replaced the duckbill valves then the pressure switch. Then I hired a professional. He was stumped but replaced the bellows. It still didn't work. He told me the key to keeping the system working was regular use of liquid soap. I put some in and vacuum was obtained immediately. Have been using putting hand soap or dishwashing liquid in the bowl ever since. Of course, this will not help with a missing part.

Interesting about the liquid soap - maybe that will stop my bellows from squeaking. How much and how often do you put it in?
I did try to loosen the nipple by hand, but wasn't sure that it was a separate piece so didn't force it. It might be in there tight since there is no rubber from the duck bill keeping the plastic parts separate.

We seldom overnight so the toilet is not used much. I apply a squirt of liquid soap whenever I remember, not every time it is used.
I can't recall if the nipple is a separate piece.

Is this the nipple we are talking about?

That's it. By the diagram it should have a duck bill on each side of it. Mine is missing the one between the nipple and the pump.

I found a service manual at http://osborneworld.com/Files/Caravan/D ... 0Guide.pdf
The diagram on page 28 looks like my system. Page 26 has a system with the nipple (part#13).

Perfect, thanks John. That service manual will come in handy.
