I'm looking to change out my anchor rode on 298 Vista, it looks straight forward until you start reaching around the compartment through the 4 inch access hole to find that the rope is attached to a cleat which is very tight and the end of the rope attached somewhere that I can't identify through feel. It looks like I will need better access than the 4 inch hole, anyone's experience with this task would be appreciated.

On my 268 there was access behind the v-berth forward mirror. Normally it is just attached to a cleat, and you can either untie it or cut it off and feed the new one through the windlass and reattach it to the cleat.

Yup, same idea on our 348. The forward mirror comes out and there's a large access opening leading to the anchor locker.

I bought a new rode setup for ours but have yet to install it.

If you are a freshwater lake boater like me who does not let out a lot of rode, you might consider switching ends because the rode that is in the anchor bay is hardly ever used and in good shape. Here is a good website to learn the chain splice:

I considered using the other end but after inspecting it, I decided to replace it.

How did you go from a 406 Carver to 298V, that's quite a move down!
