I have a 95 238 Vista. I was out on the lake yesterday and when I tried to shift into forward, the lock release (the finger button on the handle) snapped. I couldn't put it in forward or reverse. I was able to pry open the handle and use a screw driver to push it down on the plastic piece inside so I could shift. I am not even sure what the handle is called. (control lever, throttle etc) is there a FW, OMC or universal replacement? Fortunately, I have full access to the unit. Is this pretty easy to replace? Should I replace the cables while I am at it? There is a little play.

Not to big a deal to replace. Yes I would replace shift cable while you are doing it.

Here is a picture of the unit removed from the boat. The link below is the front side. I can't see to remove the handle. I removed the small Hex screw but there is still something holding it together.

Not sure what brand of control that is but for sure it's not an OE OMC control. These things can be hard to take apart so if it needed something more than a neutral switch or a trim switch I'd replace the whole unit. The Teleflex CH 1700 is a nice unit that I will replace my OE OMC control with when it quits working. Before you remove the cables find out if it pushes or pulls the cables to advance the throttle and shift to fwd. You need to know this to hook up the cables right to the new unit.

So that piece is called the OMC Lockout Rod. http://www.jmsonline.net/omc-lock-out-rod-126133.htm Not easy to come by. Hopefully, I don't have to replace the whole unit for a $8.00 piece.
