Post subject:  Prop?

So I really want to replace my prop. Keep hearing that the stainless one that I bought the boat with is wrong for this boat. So I have been looking for the correct one, but can't find that info.

here is what I have

which I believe is this prop;

I want an aluminum and maybe something that will get me on plane faster; is this right?

Thanks,

so to be clear you have a 15x17 stainless now, and you are looking at the same pitch?

what is your cruising speed? around 3 to 3500 rpms
and top speed? WOT

On a boat that size with a single prop I'm pretty sure you'll benefit greatly with a 4 blade. I'm switching soon myself.

I am open to anything, I typically cruise at 3500rpm at 27 mph...I have only had here WOT once so don't really remember what the top speed was. But I have a habit of getting her to plane then backing off to 3500rpm and staying put. I will say that 27 is rather slow on our big lake, but I can live with that, I am more concerned that it takes a bit to get her to plane, and with people and gear I have to use the trim tabs to get her to plane (not really what they are designed for I know, but it works).

So I read a bit about 4 blades vs. 3 and it does sound like if I got the right pitch 4 blade I might be a whole lot happier. thanks ric, I hadn't thought about it until you said something.

The cat's meow is the Revolution 4, but that's $$$$$. Next best would be just a factory 4 bladed Volvo Penta SS unit. You're in Vegas area shouldn't be an issue to find a shop with a loaner you can try. I'd go 19p first.

Chris, if you go 19 pitch it will take longer to get on plane.

I have 2 sets of SS props for my Duo prop....one is an F4 set... this set gets me on plane faster and is great for pulling a tube and when loaded with gear, fuel, and passengers....but sucks on fuel cause it revs higher and lower speeds at any given RPM

second set has more pitch and is a F5 set.... great for fuel economy, bad for pulling a tube, bad for a loaded boat to get on plane quick. but a better prop set for all round use if you are not pulling a tube or loaded with more than 4 passengers

so if you go up in pitch(like from a 17 to a 19) it will take longer to get on plane, but rpms will be lower when cruising.

You say you cruise at 3500 rpms at around 27....thats not to bad
I would stick with your 17 pitch and use your tabs.....thats what they are for... I always have mine dropped when taking off and pull them up after I get on plane....

if you want to experiment see if there is a prop shop with a loner like Ric has suggested
