I'm assuming you have a Kohler 5E, or one of the electronic versions. Before you do anything else, invest ten bucks and change the spark plugs. These gensets eat spark plugs like candy. Chances are the old ones will look fine. Change them anyway. If that doesn't cure the problem, get your hands on an infrared temp gun and check your temps prior to shutdown. If your temps are reading over 210 at the outside of the heat exchanger, you have a cooling issue...most of these units have a 195f thermostat...overheating could be caused by air in system, thermostat, etc. if temps are normal and shutdown still occurs, the exhaust temp shutdown switch may be bad. Hopefully this will get you started on finding the problem.
