Ok gang, was headed out yesterday, she started fine, idled thru about a 1/2 mile of no wake zone and then.......

Tried to get on a plane, really struggled for about 200 yards and couldn't do it. Turned around to head back to the slip and she fell flat on her face and wouldn't start. Been chasing down the gremlin all day yesterday but haven't solved it yet. I have spark, swapped out the fuel filter (in case it was bad gas) and have fuel...

I popped the distributor cap, minimal corrosion, popped a few plugs, good spark.

I have my mechanic stoping by tomorrow.

Thoughts?

I had the same problem a few years ago. It was the low pressure fuel pump. And yes I had the whining noise about noise about 10 minutes before it went. On mine the low pressure pump was easy to replace, when the time comes to replace the high pressure that will not be the case.

It's been whining a little bit....frig! I'm going to text my mechanic and have him check it. I'm at work and he's going to be swinging by the boat this morning.

Thanks for the suggested area of concern. I'll keep you all posted.

If you go through a dealer, they are around $850. On ebay they are going for around $615.

Thanks all. I've asked him to check the low pressure pump first. If that ain't it, I guess it's a swift kick to the twig and berries!

Mine was the high pressure pump which is replaceable, the low pressure pump is not. You will have to change out the whole assembly if it is the low pressure pump. However, if it is the high pressure pump, changing it out will only fix the problem temporarily if you have paint peeling off inside the fuel pump housing which is a problem on these fuel pump assemblies.

I wouldn't have brought it to a mechanic. The fuel pumps are pretty easy to change DIY, even for an inexperienced wrencher.

Why is a fuel pump so expensive? $800?

OEM Mercruiser pumps depending on your engine are about $150 to $300. Junk Sierra Merc pumps
are $99 .

VP pumps come as a module with both the low and high pressure pump together so you have to buy both. In theory if your high goes you could only do that but the fact is in short time the low will go.
