My galley sink drains into a sump and then is pumped overboard. I want to convert to direct overboard discharge. I know this subject has been discussed several times. A few member of the community have done this. My dilemma is, if I put in a through hull fitting, it will only be 3" off the at rest waterline. Is this too close to be safe? I have observed V 268 with through hull drains within the same proximity. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks and to those of you who share the Northern climate, think spring! Dan

If that's too close install a check valve in the drain so water can not come back up that will give you piece of mind.

I am doing this project next weekend. I am converting the galley and the head sink. I noticed the factory drilled the holes already but patched them up on the outside so you can't even tell the holes were there. I think the height above the waterline will be fine, as well as the difference in height to the sink drain is enough that I am not too worried. I do like the idea of a check valve though! Looking forward to not having to worry about the sump.

We added the gallery overboard drain a few years ago and it is very worth while to do. We are about the estimated 3" - 4" above the waterline and have had no issues. I have not done the head sink but have thought about adding a T to connect both sinks. If I do that, I would add check valves to ensure a clog in one sink would not create an overflow in the other.

By draining the gallery overboard, I don't worry about food particles clogging the pump or filter anymore.

No, not at this point. I have not had any issues without it. The scariest part is taking the hole saw to the hull, but I'm glad I did it.

With the encouragement of Jnizi and a couple of others I also did this. I agree one of the top 10 things I have done to the boat. Ditto on the scary part of drilling the hole. I ended up ready to do it but made the mistake of using the Admiral as a helper. I got a lot of "you sure you know what your doing" questions but once it was all done things were great.

I didn't use a check valve and have been in rough water. No issues at all and can't see any. If the water coming in gets high enough that it's coming in through the galley sink I suspect I'll have a ton of other problems to contend with.

My 2006 278 Galley sink direct drains overboard, from the factory. The thru-hull is only a few inches above the waterline. As long as the sink drain is above the waterline, there should not be a problem. The only concern is creating a siphon action that fills the sink, then your boat when water is repeatedly coming in the drain line. I hear gurgling sometimes when a big wake hits, but never a problem. My drain line goes from the sink drain nearly straight to the thru-hull fitting. No loops, or 'P' trap, right out! Good luck, remember, measure twice, drill once!!

I thought I had a few pictures of the install but cannot find them. I did find that I used the Groco HTH Series Thru Hull adapter. It matched best to the other thru hulls installed on the boat. You will need a helper to tighten the Thru Hull. My admiral was a great help.
