My speedo is not working, wondering if this is a common problem or not and what to look for. I know the paddle wheel is more reliable vs. the pressure type. I have done a search and can only find info on the pressure type, fixing plugged tube, ect... Has anyone else had issues with the paddle wheel style? |

My previous boat ('99 225 Sundowner) had the VDO dash/ paddle wheel sender. It was very accurate (much more accurate than my current boat's pitot tube type speedometer). It only ever gave a problem when the paddle wheel became blocked with barnacles. Is your boat permanently in the water or on a trailer? If in the water, worth checking for obstructions. Also the connector blocks, continuity of wires in the harness etc. The VDO website actually indicates the sender type, from memory it was an "Airmar", I never looked to see if they give troubleshooting advice as it never gave problems, worth a look there maybe. The sender is sealed and not serviceable. Regards, Graham |

I have replaced mine and it stopped working again. Never did work right. I cut the wire and get along with out a speedo. I boat on a river with a lot of debries and the paddle wheel takes a beating. |

Thanks for the replys, I will search the VDO site. The boat is now on a trailer in my backyard, but the prior owner had it in a slip for a year or two. I have cleaned everything, all that is left to do is check continuity and most likely replace. |

re the site covering the VDO instrument cluster, this is the web site with the technical bulletins; not as easy to find since they became Siemens VDO! http://usa.siemensvdo.com/NR/exeres/96E ... 503C2E.htm There is quite a lot of info there, including how to test the sender Regards, Graham |

Ive replaced my paddle wheel on my 258 Vista once earlier this spring and its bad already. ![]() I rely on my Chartplotter for speed, which sucks because the speedo should be more reliable than that! |
