Post subject:  Tuning up Generator

Cheers all....first want to thank all for suggestions about shower pump. I removed the pump and clean it up and had great success....save myself some $ doing it myself...so thanks again.....Now I would love some help with some questions about generator.....last season the generator started to run rough...it would almost hesitate and then it would spit out a white liquid out the outflow at the back of the boat.....and there would be a strong smell of gasoline...so I would love to hear what everyone thinks......does the generator have a filter that could need changing...plugs???? :?: :?: Thanks

I had the exact same problem last season. the generator ran great until i put a load on it, usually the AC, then it would sputter and the exhaust outflow turned into a milky white and there was a strong gas smell. I had the shop perform a tune-up on the Genset, which made it run better, but still had the problem with the gas smell and milky discharge. Come to find out, the shop only did half of a tune-up. On my genset, the exhaust manifold has to be removed to get to the back plugs, so they opted to not do it.... once the whole tune-up was done, everything runs like new.

I would start with the basics. Check the oil condition and level. Have you changed the fuel filter lately? What about the air filter? Sounds like your float or choke might be sticking, IMO. Although milky white exhaust sounds like oil is mixing in with water...

My Kohler ran crappy for a while, and then it ceased to run all together. My carburetor bowl was full of crud and my electric fuel pump died. Tapping the fuel pump while it was acting up would make it run normal again for a minute or two.

I replaced the fuel pump, replaced my fuel filter, cleaned the hell out of the carb, and it runs like a champ ever since!

PS. Ive never experienced a "milky white discharge" from my genset but I think you might need more than a marine mechanic for that one

Do yourself a favor and start by changing those plugs. You didn't specify what gen set you have, but the Kohlers most likely to turn up in FW boats (5e, 7.3E, etc) run the same Kawasaki FD501D 16hp engine. I've found that NGK7222 plugs seem to last longer than anything else in mine and others that I've recommended them to.

I can't stress enough how important it is to run that gen set as often as possible and load the hell out of it when you do it. (as much as is practical, anyway...) A 5e fully loaded doesn't put much of a strain on that engine, so running it with a light load is not working the engine at all, which is the root of a lot of the Kohler generator problems that folks have. Once you get up into the 6EF and 7.3E, there is a little more load potential there, but there probably aren't enough factory installed options to load those engines up either.

(Forum trolls may now take this opportunity to argue that if you add up the wattage/amp draw of everything on the boat it may get close to the rated capacity of the gen set, but really who runs everything all at once on a regular basis? It's not like you are going to leave your electric stove burner(s) on the whole time you are on the hook...)

Cleaning the carb is a good suggestion as well. The carb on the 5E is a fixed main jet, so you don't have a lot of options there to correct a rich condition, except to keep the carb and flame arrestor clean and to make sure your choke is properly adjusted. There is an adjustment on that carb, but it's a low speed mixture screw, which is useless since those units never run at low idle, it's 3600 or nada.

While I wouldn't say my exhaust is "milky", it does look kinda frothy when it's coming out, compared to some of the others I've seen. I'm not sure why, although I will say that unit has run slightly rich from day one, and it does tend to load up and hunt a little after being run a few hours. Choke adjustment is fine, just enough to start cold, then pulls off quickly, spark arrestor is clean. The carb was new when I bought it, but I've considered pulling it and rebuilding it, maybe the main jet is a tad out of spec or the float is a little high, causing the rich condition. No rainbows from the exhaust, though...to me that kind of rules out fuel or oil, but maybe I was wrong, there.

Over the last year or two, I have been able to find almost no info on the net about any similar appearance of the exhaust water... thats really what caught my attention about this post. I'll be curious now to see if fixing my carb issue will clear up my exhaust water.

Thanks again to jgreve,teach80,and dgressman....the info u provide was so appreciated....I have taken the Kohler apart and have locate all the need replacement items (fuel filter, oil filter etc..) but I cannot find the second spark plug...in the manual it says on non service side) which has me baffled....tried looking for at per diagram but was unable to locate it...do I have to remove something or am I missing something...also any recommendations on the preferred type of oil to use for the Kohler 5e.....10w-30 or 40??? Thanks for advice...

Straight 30W oil is what I run in mine. Second spark plug is opposite side of engine (directly behind) the one in front. I can see mine, and can barely get a wrench on it enough to take it off. If you have the sound shield, it may be next to impossible without removing it.

It's worth noting that while the 5E and 7.3E and variants all share the same engine, the 4CZ is a slightly different beast, at least as far as engines go. The 4CZ and Family (3.5 CFZ, 5CFZ, and 6.5 CFZ) are powered by a 21 HP Honda, while the 5E and it's siblings are powered by the 16HP Kawasaki. For what it's worth, this is what the 5E manual recommends for oil:

Looks like either 10W40 or Straight 30 would work nicely. I run straight 30 in mine as well.
