I seem to have lost my throttle in reverse. I dont think this is normal, or i never noticed it before. I havent dug into it yet, thought I would tap this wealth of knowledge first. 2001 vista 248 with 5.7 duoprop. I can push the neutral button and pull back on throttle and it will rev in neutral, but when I am backing the boat it will only idle. Ideas on where to start?

Thanks
Rick

Check your cable adjustment to make sure it's securely attached. Cable could be sliding...

Sorry, forgot to add, at the shifter and throttle body!

Same engine and prop setup, mine doesn't do that it will throttle up in reverse just fine.

As stated - it should definitely throttle up in reverse.

Are you saying that when you throttle in rev, it will only go to idle even when advancing the throttle in rev, or does the throttle handle just stop at the idle position?
You need to get a schematic of the throttle handle and see what's going on with it or the cables. I bought a new Teleflex CH 1700 last year because my 26 year old OMC control is getting a bit loose but its not bad enough to replace it just yet...

When i put the boat in reverse, it will only idle backwards. Shifter will go back like normal. The wierd part to me was that when I push the neutral button down and rev it in reverse, it revs the motor. I will probably take it apart this weekend if I have time.....to be continued..... 8)

IMO, the problem MUST be inside the shift/throttle control. Not the cable. Not at the engine.

Alright so I took shifter out to take a look and there is nothing obvious sticking out to me. It is an OMC shifter. There is detent when shifting into forward then it throttles up. Doesn't seem to make it to a detent if there is one in reverse. The throttle cable will not move in the reverse position. If I press the neutral button down on top of shifter, I have full range and the lever moves farther and it revs the motor. Almost seems like the plates aren't lined up to make the reverse detent so it can go farther to rev the motor. Didnt want to tear shifter apart quite yet....that's next I guess.

I'm not much help on what the problem is, but I can confirm that there should be a detent in reverse exactly as in forward, idle in the detent with the engine increasing RPM past the detent.

I think i am closer to the problem. I am not making the rear detent in the shifter which lets the throttle go down farther when in reverse. I went back to check cable end that I replaced last season and I found that the plastic line surrounding the cable had partially seperated from the brass tube end of the cable. I tried adjusting to no avail. Going to try and pick up a new cable today.

O.K. figured it out, with the help of the owner of Dry Dock Marine in Tri-county. If you need parts or service, they are kinda hidden but I have been very happy with doing business with them. I went there to buy my new cable as it had a bad spot in it, like it had come uncrimped. Anyway, there are 2 holes that are approximately an 1/8 inch apart on the shift lever. When I installed the new cable i apparently used the wrong hole which changes the throw of the cable. I could swear that it worked when I installed it but maybe the seperation on the cable made it worse. So I switched holes and now everything works as it should.

Great simple solution and thanks for the feedback.
I am planning to replace my old OMC control (already have the new one) when whatever part is NLA inside breaks, lol.
I read through the instructions (Teleflex CH 1700) and since these units are made to work with all different drive, the set up can be confusing. Push/pull to advance throttle, and push/pull to shift into fwd, are the points that matter.
