Post subject: | ..... and my second problem from today is the sending unit |
I know sending units are never really exact on boats, but mine has been really bad, to the point that the alarm sometimes goes off with that incessant annoying beeping even when I have half a tank of gas. When I was down at the boat today doing some work, I had planned on checking out the anti-syphon valve, and then the sending unit to see if there were any obvious issues with it. Well the anti-syphon valve was not in the most accessible place so by the time I actually got that removed and back on, I didn't really have any time to mess around with the sending unit. However there does seem to be some problem with the electrical system coming out of the sending tank that was causing the low fuel alarm to start sounding as it started happening today after I put the access cover back on (and of course after I put all my tools away and everything stowed back in the aft cabin). So I uncovered the access plate and I noticed when I moved the wires around the fuel gauge stopped beeping and went from E to a little over a half (which is still not accurate but better than empty and that annoying beeping). Does this sound like something in the sending unit is causing a short? Or is it more likely an issue of wiring to the sending unit? I was thinking about replacing the unit, but if that isn't causing the problems then I'd rather not. If it is the sending unit, does anyone know the model number for a replacement? On the FW website for parts shopping, it lists it as a sending unit 26" RDS 09792. I tried looking around online and can't seem to find anything that matches that. Thanks |

Unplug the sending unit, and use a jumper wire with the two prongs from the harness end. Have someone look at the gauge...it should read full. I just replaced a sending unit on my 318. WEMA USA, http://www.wemausa.com/sensors/level-Fu ... 9wzdONdWSo . Buy the 26" version and you'll be set...it was plug and play on mine. They are not the OEM vendor, but just as good if not better. |

Hey firecadet, thanks for the response, some questions though. I know wema makes good sending units, I had actually replaced the sending unit on my old sea ray with a wema, but on that link there are three models shown, do you recall which one you purchased? Also, when you say use a jumper with the two prongs from the harness end, I'm a little confused as to what you mean? Thanks Jason |

A jumper is a piece of wire stripped on both ends or with clips on the end. Plug that into the harness and it will stop beeping. |

Sorry, the first one. |

Firecadet, thanks for letting me know which one. As far as the jumper cable goes, right now there is a red wire going to the center of the sending unit, a green and black wire tied together and connected to a prong on the rim of the sending unit via a slide on connecter, and there is what appears to be a thicker black ground wire attached to the sending unit via a screw on connector (I believe anyway, I'll have to double check this). You're saying I should just disconnect the wires from the unit and connect the red to the green/black with the jumper cable and complete the circuit? Sorry if these seem like silly questions. |

Correct. My sending unit just had two wires going to it. When I jumped them, the gauge went to full. |
