cockpit upholstery estimate

Has anyone had a 258 vista (or similar sized vista) cockpit reupholstered recently? Got an estimate of $2000 to have the cockpit completely redone. This would include two colors, piping and the original design from the factory or I could change the design if I wanted (probably won't do that unless I saw something really cool). This is the business that my brother uses for his body shop when he needs to have any interior work done, so I trust that the work will be quality, just curious if this price is way out of line.

I have a 278v I had the dinette taking out and built/replaced with a couch and the forward berth and aft cabin cushions redone for $1500.00. Sounds like your estimate is in the ball park.
Something you might want to consider which I am at this time is replace the captain bench seat with 2 swivel reclining seats. I feel it will give more room in the cockpit. Something to think about since your considering redoing the cockpit.

Thanks for the response Steve. I hadn't thought about replacing the seat, but do you have a pic or a link to what you're thinking of doing? I'm not sure how much work that would be replacing the frame of the bench seat, but it sounds interesting.

I was looking at some captain chairs they have on pontoon boats. Veada seats and pontoon stuff.com
We would then mount on a swivel base on top of the fiberglass stand that the bench is already on.

You're better off ordering the materials yourself and just having your guy do the labor. Order Omnova Nautolex Grand Cayman series of marine vinyl with the Prefixx coating and use Gore Tenara thread.

You know how you're not supposed to use bleach based cleaner to clean marine vinyl interior because it will destroy the thread and weaken the vinyl? Which sucks because it makes things so clean very easily? Yeah, you won't have that problem with Nautolex and Tenara thread. It's the factory recommended method of cleaning off mildew. Most higher end boats these days come factory with these materials now.

Steve that definitely sounds like it would free up some room in the cockpit, and would give it a new look but on thinking about it, I kind of like having the bench seat for when certain guests come on the boat.

Ric, I'll have to ask what material he uses, I'm not sure if they'd do the labor if not supplying the material.

If the shop won't tell you the brand of the vinyl and if they use anything other than tenara thread walk away. If you still want to push forward at least buy them the threading, a spool of tenara is only $100. You'll never worry about seams coming apart at least.

I'm sure they'll tell me what brand of vinyl they are using. They are a legitimate shop and my brother uses them when his bodyshop has a job that requires upholstery. They also did the interior and convertible top on his 76 caddy convertible and they definitely do quality work, but like I said not sure how they'd be with me bringing my own materials. I'll have to ask what they use and go from there. Definitely good info on the type of thread to use though, that is definitely a big issue with my seats.
