In our boat have a shower sump box with a bildge pump+float to evacuate the shower water overboard. Would it be a good thing to install a check valve after the my bilge pump and overboard? Reason why I am asking is when I push the water out it does not go 100% out and maybe some water drops back in the shower sump box. We are located in Canada I am afraid when the boat will be on the block for the winter the water between the check valve and overboard will freeze and crack or dammage my hose or hull, if I blow some air to empty the line will it be enough? Any suggestions if I should or not install a check valve?

Thanks for your time

Benoit

I just drain and clean the box before putting it away and finally add a gallon of plumbing antifreeze down the shower drain. Anything left in the box will not freeze as I am at the same latitude and winter temperatures and never had a problem doing it this way on my current boat or previous Regal boat. Just double check that nothing flows into that sump box that you might operate after doing the above, like an air conditioner drain or other source of water.

I also just start dumping antifreeze in the shower sump and let it cycle and it will displace all the water

By filling the sump box by pouring plumbers anti-freeze down the shower drain, the water is displaced in that pipe. When the sump box fills, it would then discharge any water in the pipe leading to the outside. IF any water remains in the pipe, it would now contain NO water, thus it cannot freeze. I see no benefit in putting in a check valve.

Interestingly enough, in a discussion with my marina today, it was suggested that once the above has been done, it is a good idea to remove the excess anti-freeze from the sump box, as it tends to make plastic parts brittle over time!

If the sump box is a Rule there is an inline check valve in the discharge hose inside the sump box. I have had to replace this check valve. I called Rule customer service and they sent a new one. I use RV antifreeze to winterize.
