Post subject:  New owner from Singapore

Quick intro post as this looks like a great forum, I look forward to becoming part of the community and asking loads of daft questions :D

I am new to boating, did a lot of dinghy sailing in the UK as a child and tried again when I moved to Singapore last year but the wind here makes it too difficult to hold a beer at the same time. Singapore is a tiny, congested island so in order to explore a bit and get away from it all the only real solution was a boat.

Looked around for a long time while I took and passed my PPCDL (Private Pleasure Craft Driving License) which is mandatory here to operate a boat in Singapore waters. I looked at some awful, really really awful sheds that I could not believe were still floating. As usual the man-maths meant the budget was increasing each time I looked at a boat, so eventually I just blew it and bought a very nice 268 Vista (2000) with a healthy 5.7Gsi and around 350 hours. I bought it from a friend, and know how well it has been looked after by him and how much he has spent on it over the years so have gone into this with my eyes (and wallet) wide open... let's see how that works out!

Couple of photos to share, boat anchored at Pulau Hantu (Devil Island)

Early morning ride out to Lazarus Island

Arrive in an empty cove, small jetty to moor at if you are early enough, or you can anchor in Eagle Bay instead and swim to shore where you have the whole beach to yourself

Or at least you think you do, until you see monitor lizard tracks coming out of the water and heading into the trees...

I guess most of you are US based, lots of the threads I have read show people boat on lakes there, so hopefully these are some interesting shots for you guys. If there's anyone else on here from Singapore then let me know!

Yes, we have active members from all around the English speaking world, both coastal and inland waters. USA, Canada, Australia, UK, New Zealand are all very active. Nice to have your pictures from Singapore.

Beautiful spot....
Well salt water is good in one way...it does not rot wood cored transoms the way fresh water does, because the microorganisms that eat the wood, can't live in salt water. If you have wood rot in a boat used in salt it came from rain water not leaving the boat in salt water.

Nice boat...welcome. We're in our third Four Winns Vista over the last 29 years and no regrets. Tons of good info in this forum. On another note, if deafwish had a chance to cruise Lake Huron's North Channel, Georgian Bay, and for that matter, the Great Lakes, he would dump the salt water in half a heart beat. :D We've done both and fresh water wins hands down. Enjoy your Vista.

Welcome aboard and thanks for the cool pics! It's got me sitting here thinking about the journey that 268 took going from Cadillac Michigan to Singapore. I'm sure you'll enjoy your 268, it's a great boat :D

Thanks for the warm welcome, I'm not going to enter into the salt/fresh water debate yet - all I can say is that salt water holds its challenges and the threat of sharks, jellyfish, saltwater crocs and pirates does add to the excitement

Had another great day out on Saturday, our dog Charlie joined us on board for the first time and took to it very well. He's well used to bouncing around in sports cars so I think the combination of speed, wind-in-the-ears and swimming proved to be irresistible to him!

@bliss36 The journey for the 268 to come over from the US was just over 1 year back. It was cleaned, drained of all fluids, arch taken down, wrapped and then tilted 45 degrees to fit inside a 40ft shipping container. I think the rails were removed as well, not too sure. The 268 beam is about as big as you can fit in a standard container, anything wider needs to be put on a trailer or custom frame and shipped on a ro-ro or at much greater expense. Still works out a good deal cheaper than buying locally in Asia, and there is a far greater choice available in the US.

A 268 in a sea can?

I had to see photos of this... http://boatexportusa.com/boat-shipping-methods/

I would have never thought you could ship a boat like that. Very cool.

Welcome Vista_sg,

I googled "Monitor Lizard" as well. Wondered how big they can get. Seems 10 feet long is possible and they can run up to 28 MPH and swim. Hopefully they don't think boaters are tasty and you don't meet one while swimming and try running for cover (hard to run faster than 28 MPH).

Kidding aside, it's interesting seeing boating pics from various parts of the world (both fresh and salt :)).
