Good day - Spring is here , I am told , the snow flurries today make me think otherwise. Still, thinking of chores to do when it warm enough to pull the boat out. Has anyone had experience with the winch motor being too weak to retrieve anchor ? This happens in light conditions , not trying to pull up the bay bottom. Too often I have to slide up to the prow to give it a little help. Engine is running while doing this so it shouldn't be a battery charge issue ( I think).

Thanks for any thoughts .

I'd be firstly checking all terminals for corrosion, which would be creating resistance.

And check the voltage at the winch.

Do you have the Maxwell Freedom 500 windlass that came on most 268s? I had a similar situation a few years ago and I found the center nut where the winch handle goes had backed off a tiny bit and lost its grip on the gypsy wheel and the anchor would not retrieve. I thought the motor was weak by the way it was acting...might be worth a check. If thats the model u have there is also a tension arm that goes bad and is easily replaced. http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?path=-1|2276108|2276145|2276149|2276152&id=797062

You are moving the boat forward to release the anchor first?

We had the same problem last summer and did exactly what Seapickle II suggested and it works like a champ. Time to dismantle, repair, clean, replace tension arm and reassemble less than an hour. Best wishes! :D
