I was cleaning the bilge area this weekend and I noticed a wire that is bundled in with several wires that run from my battery to an area somewhere behind my engine (Vista 268). The wire is red and not very heavy (maybe 16 gauge). It has a black plastic piece (about two inches long) located about a foot from the end, and a circular connector. It is hanging loose and not connected to the battery. Any ideas as to what it is?

I used to have an old Sea Ray and there was a wire similar to this on my battery that was for some kind of de-ionizer but I am not sure about this.

The black plastic piece about 2" long is a fuse holder it sounds like.
Sounds like a wire that the previous owner ran at some point.
Probably no way to know without tracing the wire and then the other end may just be cut off.

Does it run to your bilge pump?

You have a Mercruiser?
It sounds like the power wire for the Mercathode system.

I did a web search on Mercathode Systems and the wire I described looks an awful lot like the one used to power these systems. I bet that's it. Thanks JeffLW, you the man! Now I have to wait for the weekend to get back to the lake to check it out. God I hate the work week!

I found mine almost the same way. I was hooking the batteries back up in the spring and noticed that one laying there after I was finished. Had to do some digging to find out what it was.
