Post subject:  Cabin Smell
My Vista 268 always has an odor in the cabin so following some advice I cleaned my bilge this weekend but to my dismay the cabin still gets a gassy, oily smell. It isn't too bad and it airs out quickly but I was wondering if this was just the "nature of the beast " kind of thing or is there something else I can do?

I've known Kanberra Gel to be very effective against organic odor like mildew and mold but I was not aware that it was effective against gas type fumes. I'll give it a shot, but I was hoping to eliminate the odor vs. masking it.

We used to get the same odor you are referring to in the aft cabin of our 258. It was always prevalent after cruising and the bilge area was still warm. After things cooled down, the odor would go away. We always kept our bilge clean but realized that some engine oil may be under the engine or it was left from the crankcase breather coming back into the bilge.

I had a 258 and did not have that problem. I should have added, you first need to find the source of the odor. Your gas tank is under the quarter berth. I would check everything I could for leaks.

First time user... I have a 2001 298 and have the same fuel type odor after closing the cabin for a day or so even with the air on. Last year a guy with the same boat (but 2002) was looking at our marina and asked me about this exact issue! There has to be a fix out there somewhere, I'm not leaking fuel for sure.

It helps to put a few dryer sheets through out the cabin.
