But it's not anymore. I think you can see why. So we hooked the cable to the rear hole then added some length at the outdrive. I think it will work for a while...going to have to find a new control box...

Why did it break, is your cable getting stiff?

Interesting. I thought you might find that.
Take a look at the Teleflex CH 1700. Not cheap but very nice.
What make is the old control? I still have the OE OMC one on mine but when something in it breaks that's what I'm putting in.
I'd swap it out sooner than later. Look how thin the metal is between the busted out hole and the one you are using lol.....

Checked Cable, it moved freely....no idea why it broke. I know it's old, maybe just age?

Lou I looked at that one, not as worried about the cost of the unit as I am the labor to put it in. Anyway to find an OE OMC one? So it's basically a swap, instead of cutting new holes (through vinyl as well as fiberglass) perhaps new wiring, maybe a new cable? with a aftermarket unit I feel like I have no idea what troubles I would have getting it to work. Mind you I don't have anywhere near the experience you do.

The OE OMC ones are probably NLA (no longer available). The newer FW boats that have Volvo power all seem to come with the same Teleflex CH 1700 but with a Volvo sticker on it. I would take a good look on how its attached to the side panel. That's the biggest challenge, getting the old unit in and out. The part that can be confusing, but is explained pretty well in the instructions is this:
The Teleflex unit is adapable to OMC, Merc or Volvo engines, I/O or outboard. So there are more different positions that the cables can be mounted in. So you have to know the following:
Does the cable push, or pull the advance the throttle
Does it push or pull to shift the unit into forward gear

The instructions I have for the one I bought (got it last year but did not install it yet, had to fix other things, old control still OK but probably doing it next fall) tell you this:
Volvo I/O:
Pulls to open throttle
Pushes for fwd shift
This determines which hole you attach the cables to.
You may have to make the hole in the backing panel bigger (post a pic of your interior panel then we can tell you more). Sometimes you can remove the control without having to remove the whole panel which on some boats is a trial. As in, you remove the shift lever. Then disconnect the throttle and shift cables at the engine. See if you can remove the screws that hold the unit to the inside panel. Then you are looking to find the connections for the neutral safety switch and the trim switch, these have to be unplugged before removing the shift unit. The idea is to have someone hold onto the cable ends, and guide them out while you slide the shifter unit out through the side panel if it has an open area large enough to do so, or if it opens up into the engine compartment. Look where the cables go from the engine to the side panel to see how its set up. Each boat is different.
You may be able to use it for the season the way it is, but I'd count on getting a better unit sooner than later....

is your OE one like this, if so they might still be available:

This is the one I have, these you can't get any longer:

Thank you!

That's it exactly! Where did you find the picture?

I believe #7 In that breakout view is the part that broke(of course it obsolete now)
But the whole unit for $283 doesn't seem like a bad idea?

The picture is from a ebay listing for a used one. It was the best picture I could find in the brief search I did.

It looks like the price of $283 is without the trim switch. I think it comes with #50 plug, switch hole and you need to order #71 trim conversion kit to get the switch. But you should be able to take the switch from your old control and move it over.

Evinrude online parts shows the same parts diagram for this but a new part number(5006561) for $333

http://www.evinrudeonlineparts.com/OemParts#%2fEvinrude%2fREMOTE_CONTROLS_1997%2fREMOTE_CONTROL_ASSEMBLY_-_CONCEALED_SIDE_MOUNT%2f34046%2f39307

But this is what that one looks like:

So before ordering anything I would confirm what you are actually going to get.

Just got off the phone boats.net he said that they did replace this part number with 5006561 and it does come with the trim switch and its still $284.

Then I started looking on ebay..

Found this expired listing (rats!)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Evinrude-Johnson-OMC-Concealed-Side-Panel-Mount-Remote-Control-Kit-176917-176911-/201107366985

and theses pictures of my exact unit.

I only really need that gun metal grey piece with the 4 holes you see in the photos...

Yep, boats.net confirmed that this part has been replaced by the 5006561

ReplacementImage

MineImage

I have no way of knowing if that Control box will fit, or connect right to my boat. I believe what I have now is OE and the guy on the phone said that it should be a direct replacement. But you can see that it's a totally different size and configuration. So not sure how the electrical connects, or the cables connect, or if the hole that's there now will be the right size. And I am afraid I am going to end up with holes in my vinyl inset that don't get covered (because the original one had a plate that covered an area of about 4")

I did find a used one on ebay for $90 but it's used and it looks like it was ripped out of a hull, wires cut/missing.

Lou, this operation is way over my head, I just need to get the part and give it to the mechanic, do you think I am safe in getting this one? I know that's a loaded question, but my thought is...it's going to work, might just have to fabricate some parts or make some cuts to get it in, think that's right?

TIA

Size wise I think it is close. But I think I will end up like the picture below because of the lack of that piece with all the small holes in it.

What about the basic Volvo Penta control, not the fancy one? It's only $230
Part # 3885624

Joet, yes that's exactly what I thought would happen.

Ric where's that? Will it work? what's the difference, I mean what makes it not fancy?
