I don't have both side by side to compare, but that model seems to be the "budget" lever compared to the more fancy black/chrome one.

Well I finally bit the bullet and ordered one today, who'd thought Amazon would have the best price?

$298.38

http://www.amazon.com/Seastar-CH1751P-Side-Mount-Control/dp/B0053HPNSE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431928410&sr=8-1&keywords=ch1751p

Of course for that price it does not have the tilt or the emergency cutoff like you see in the picture, but mine are mounted elsewhere anyhow.

I certainly will, assuming my mechanic will let me take pictures over his shoulder. As this repair I feel is above my level of comfort.

With these the biggest issue is getting the old one out. Once you figure out the direction of the cables for shifting into fwd and opening the throttle, its not that complex. On my boat the only reason why I have not done it yet is removing the coaming panel is a major pain. I figured out a way to do it without having to do that but will do it in the fall after I winterize it.

Lou On my vista there is a box that the VHF is mounted in it's just in front of the remote control box. When the mechanic looked at it he removed that box (6 screws) and was able to remove the whole control box. So at least on my vessel I don't believe I will have to take off that panel, hoping we can just remove and reinstall though the hole left by the radio box.

The challenge in doing it that way, is that the cables are attached to the box, if you can get in there and disconnect them it will work. I would think that if you disconnected the cables on the engine, disconnected the electrical connections on the control box (trim and neutral safety switch) and then unscrewed the mounting screws for the box, you could pull it out through that opening and disconnect the cables.
If not, then another way, would be to see where the cables come into the engine compartment. If there is enough space for the cables to come out with the control attached, you can disconnect the cables on the engine, un-plug the connectors on the control box for the trim unit and the neutral safety switch and remove the mounting screws for the control box. Then have someone guide the cables out rearward and the box should follow. In mine I think this way will work. The older style OMC control is a heavier duty unit and its not easy to disconnect the cables from it when its installed. Its more like the BRP one on the first page.

Lou this pic is taken from that hole with the control pulled out. It's how we connected it to the other hole. Looks like he had enough cable to pull it through

Once you remove the Radio box Chris, it'll be easy enough, like you say.
Once the 'lever' is disconnected from the mechanism and you can unscrew the mechanism from the side panel, the panel with the vinyl on can come off and then there's a post box cut from the fibreglass in the side and it's easy. There's two small screws holding the vinyl panel on and then it kinda pulls upwards off the brackets.
Let me know if you need any help/pictures as i've removed mine before.

Cheers

Thanks Jsyphil,

When we repaired it by moving it to the back hole, I never figured out how to remove that vinyl panel? You say there are two screws, can you tell me where? I never figured out how to get the vinyl panel off.

Thanks,

Quick! Looks good, too....

Mine was held on with a bracket and two small screws, here:

Image

And then the whole panel pulls 'upwards' and comes off three mounting brackets....

You can move it when the lever is still on, but by far the easiest way is to remove the lever and the half of the control box that is screwed to the vinyl and then it can come off completely.
If you need more detailed pics of this then i can get some for you mate.

Cheers, and good luck! 8)

Mechanic just left for the day...we got the new box in, it looks great. We also had to replace both the shifter cable (which was bent) and the throttle cable because there was no way to attach that cable to the new control box. All done , now the boat won't start  it turns over, we checked the kill switch, we checked the fuel pumps, they are getting no power, checked the plugs..no spark. It was running fine before, mechanic thinks the ignition relay is out, but he is going to look into it some more tonight. Any thoughts from you guys? So close....

Neutral safety switch.

Mine is located at the shifter... Yours likely is too. Seeing as all you did was change the shifter that's where I put my money.
