Vinyl To Cover Faded Paint?

I cannot afford a new paint job at the moment so I was wondering if anyone has had an experience with vinyl on the hull of the boat and if it could be a solution. The right side is faded very badly and almost looks like someone tried to "fix" it themselves in spots so I was thinking about having a navy vinyl stripe made to cover the existing painted stripe and then add new pin stripes at the bottom. What do you think?

Yup, sure can.

Use Oracal 751c vinyl. It's saltwater rated outdoor vinyl that is guaranteed for 7 years.

Have you had a pro come out and try to rub/wax that out? Some of those guys can really work wonders.

Are you sure it's painted? If it's gelcoat just grab a rotary buffer, 3m perfect-it compound, and a wool pad. Will look like brand new in minutes.

I ordered a cut vinyl stripe from Fourwinns to match mine when I damaged it. Mine was just a small 2 inch wide stripe but as I recall the roll was still around $90 or so. My graphics company now does wide format and I have some cut vinyl on hand. The problem I can see would be getting a vinyl that would match and then secondly finding the cut pattern for it. I could see if I can get a sample of a a blue vinyl if you would like to see how close we can come to matching it or check with a sign supply company near you.

As an owner of a sign and graphics shop for 13 years I can offer a few words.
Firstly..... are you absolutely sure the blue stripe you mentioned is painted?, most likely it is a gelcoat.
Here are what I believe are a few considerable options for your situation
If the blue stripe is painted, you can sand and repaint
If it is a gelcoat you can wet-sand and buff
or you can apply vinyl over the whole thing

I am not an expert on paint or gelcoat on a boat, so I can't offer you any advice here
If it is gelcoat, you can do what most of us do at least once a year, just buff it or if it really faded or oxidized, you can wet-sand. Since money is an issue (it is with most of us) this is prob. you cheapest path to a shiny looking boat.

Or you can apply vinyl over the whole thing, this is not cheap. In my area, a job like yours would cost anywhere between 8 to a thousand dollars. If you do chose this path, use only 3 mm vinyl, anything thinner will crack and split in the sun, and use a UV spray, 3M has a great one.
Sorry I can't give any advice on Salt Water rated vinyl, I never heard of it, maybe that is because we do not have salt water around my neck of the woods.

buddy had a full wrap done a year ago and it looks steller.. the improvements and cost effectiveness of wraps these days had made them a great cost effective solution.

That's not quite true....I spent about 4 hours with my rotary buffer and 3M this weekend on my Vista...in the end my Hull looks a little better, but my arms hurt terribly. Holding that buffer up over my head for four hours was brutal.

Granted I was using 3M restorer and Wax, do you think the perfect-it would work better?

LOL! Your boat will look brand new in half that time. Not even "a little better", but brand new.

$1000 to wrap the blue stripe?? Are you crazy?!?!

You buy a roll of vinyl, application spray, a heat gun, a few squeegees, a good knife and get to town. A 30"x10yd roll is $80. You need two rolls. You're looking at around $200 total. Slap it up rough and cut to final shape on boat. No pre cut or patterns needed. It's like installing window tint.

You'll spend more money on buffing supplies and that only lasts 6 months/year between jobs. Vinyl will look perfect for 7 years. I was going to do it to my boat but instead it sold.

Hey Ric,
I agree with you that it is much cheaper to buy everything and do it yourself.
But there is a difference between the price of doing it yourself and hiring someone to do it, and that could be applied for anything you can imagine.

My buddies boat is fully wrapped head to toe. It's alot tougher than you think

Yes it's gel coat but someone previously tried to paint over it in one spot so now I have a different color blue spot, a faded spot and a buffed spot all on one side.
