We have a 2006 278 Vista. When we bought it last May both fresh water and holding tank sensors worked. Now neither works. I've read that some people have replaced the sending units, but I'm not sure where those are.

It seems logical that they are in the midberth however only the center board comes out easily as the hanging locker is covering the starboard (holding tank) and the A/C enclosure is on top of the port (freshwater tank). I started to remove the A/C enclosure but decided that wasn't a good idea.

Surely they didn't build the boat around these sensors. I can't even see the holding tank like some others have said they use a flashlight to determine when it is full.

Thoughts?

My 2007 278 is the same way. I cannot figure out how you are supposed to get the outer cover boards up.
Hope someone will respond with a good solution.

From what I have heard and read, replacing the sensor will help in the short run but then the sensor will quit reading again because a bunch of crap builds up on it (literally). I have been trying the "water softener and laundry detergent" method to keep the tank and sensor clean. I have only conducted this twice and the sensor still doesn't work but I don't see how in could hurt regardless of the outcome.

To keep the black water tank clean it is useful to add water softener and a cup of laundry detergent. It helps removes waste odor, helps quickly break down waste and toilet paper and prevents scum from forming on the sides of the tanks and the sensors.

My 258 is the same way. Can't even see a single section of the tanks without seriously pulling things out.
I just live with it with it and try to empty the holding tank as often as possible and keep the fresh water tank topped off. We have a pumpout boat that comes around once a week and will empty even if we aren't there so its pretty convenient for us.
It does bug me not knowing how full the holding tank is....

FWIW, 2007 278 vista, lifted up the sink bowl to access the water and waste tank indicators as they appeared to not be working. There is a lot of tension on the wiring harness connector. Reseated connectors, now it works.
