Good Day

I have a 2000 268 7.4 with a Volvo out drive fresh water use only

Seem to recall reading check the out drive gear oil weekly in manual

Any advise on how to do this when shes in the water. Seems once every year would be tons

You can't!
The plug you'd remove to check it will be under the water line. I pull the boay once during the season to check it; then change it at the end....

Shuman, on my VP DP drive there is a dipstick at the top of the drive which sits just above the waterline. One of the few "convenience" items that Volvo has. I have never actually checked mine while in the water but noticed it and thought it was a good idea. Outside of that and the water pump inside the engine room, I miss my Merc! It was set up so much more mechanic friendly

When I am at the boat this weekend, i will try to take a picture of it since my boat is in the water. I also dont know if it was made different in 2000 versus the newer models (mine is 2006).

I believe mine is on the top also how often have you had to add gear oil in yours /?

Mine gets changed once a year. I have never had to add any during the season. The level stays consistent. If your level does not, or the dipstick comes out looking milky, make sure to have your drive taken in for service. Some on here might be able to help you through that problem, but I personally wouldnt even try any work like that.

True the level should not drop. If so there is a leak which is usually obvious. The one time it won't be is when its from the input shaft seal which will leak gear oil into the bellows. What's not obvious is getting water in the gear oil. How that happens is also from a leak, but after the drive has been run, and then sits and cools off, the drive oil cools also and contracts and that can pull water into the drive. Always replace the fiber, rubber or plastic washers/orings that seal the drain and fill plugs.
