Post subject: | Noise coming from drive. |
I have searched the forums, but didn't find exactly what im hearing. Last week, coming home from the 4th of July fireworks, as I pulled into the harbor and slowed to idle I noticed a thumping sound. I placed it in neutral and the noise went away. Placed it back into forward and teh noise returned. The knock or thump did not get louder or harder as I turned to the left or right. I did notice however than when I placed it into reverse, it was hard to get it to go. Once in reverse, if i slipped into neutral, it was easy to go back to reverse. But when I tried to put it in Forward, it was hard to get it to go again. But again, if I put it into neutral, it would go back to forward easy. It would only be hard when I was changing directions. I have had it in the water for two months only using it for a couple of hours each weekend. Never noticed the thumping noise until I came home that night. I took it out of the water today, but have not had a chance to really look at it. With the drive in neutral, I did spin the prop and could hear a clicking noise coming from the lower unit. It sounded like it was coming from the bearing area just before the shaft comes out of the drive that the prop attaches to. It would click in either direction. The oil level was good before I put it into the water in may. I plan on checking into it further soon, but for now I just wanted to pick some brains to get an idea. Hopefully I provided enough info to at least get started. Thanks for your help. Chuck |

Well, I jsut went out and ran it for a couple of minutes and apparently it does make noise while in neutral. Couldnt really tell where it was coming from but I guess since the upper unit is always moving, it must be coming from there. ![]() |
