Question for you experts out there: The other day my wife and I were cruising in our 07 V278 and as I throttled down to no-wake speed the engine died. I was able to start it back up after letting it sit for a few minutes and we proceeded on our way. No issues putting the boat in and out of gear. Upon our return to the marina later in the day I throttled down to bring the boat off plane and noticed the engine surged a bit (with a little sputtering) before settling down at minimum throttle speed. It did not stall this time and it operated normally in and out of gear into the slip. This has never happened before. Fuel/water separator was replaced this season. I'm going for another boat ride next week and will see if the issue reoccurs. Roughly 200 hours on the engine. Initial thoughts? Thanks! |

Mine did this then quickly got worse and it ended up being the fuel pump issue that these engines have. I hope that's not your problem but I think the 5.7 engine has the same pump as my 08 8.1. If you do have the same pump it seems that it is almost a sure thing that the pump will eventually fail. I know Bliss36 has the same engine and he found paint chips in his pressure regulator. Those have also been reworked and use a clip instead of a screen. That might be a place to start looking first. |

Thanks for the info! I'm taking the boat out for a cruise tomorrow so we'll see if the problem resurfaces....hopefully I can make it until the end of the season. Was it the low or high pressure pump you had issues with? Or both? Thanks again. |

If it does end up being that (and I hope it's not) there are several sources for the pump. I found one that was about half the price of what another vendor was quoting. They're not cheap though if you have the same pump number as mine. Read this thread for a little more information on this issue: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/faqs/ ... on_id=1065 Once again I hope that's not your problem. You might check the pressure regulator in the meantime since that's not hard to do. I had a video link to that but can't locate it at the moment. If I do find it I'll post that link for you too. |

Thanks again for the great info. The boat ran like a champ today but I'm going to keep a close eye on it. |

Do you have a whine when it is running? If so, that is a tell-tale sign of the high-pressure pump being bad and there is no need to replace the low-pressure pump. I had to replace both of my high-pressure pumps when our club switched over to government mandated gas (which was short-lived) and I have had no problems since. |

No whine as of yet thankfully..... at least I know what I'm in for once it starts to fail. ![]() |

I had a similar issue. A mechanic friend of mine recommended cleaning the throttle body. I purchased some sensor safe cleaner and sprayed it quite thoroughly and haven't had the problem occur again. Hope this helps. Jason |
