Took the above out for a test drive today. Boat has sat for about 5 years, owner had some health issue that never improved enough to get using it... First half hour was great, then started sputtering and would barely idle. I have had a few friends have issues with their water/fuel separator after different issues with fuel. Seems to be same. Anyone else have issues like this? Didn't have any tools to pull it to see what came out....

Thanks in advance!

You need to pump the old fuel out of the tank or you will keep bunging up your separator. Also keep in mind that the fuel you are burning is very low in octain which your engine does not enjoy.

Prior to pumping the fuel out I suggest adding sea foam to the gas and going for a quick burn to mix it up. This way the gas and water will blend and you can be sure to leave as little water behind as possible.

If you are seriously considering the boat I would recommend getting rid of the old fuel and putting fresh fuel in it. 5 year old gas is a long way from what the engine needs. Make sure you don't hear any squeal or other funny noise from the fuel pumps. Replacing the fuel pump can start at 800-900 dollars just for the pump plus labor. Depending on the seller's cooperation and pricing, and other considerations it may either be a bargain or not worth considering. If it works out for you and everything checks out, I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with it.

There was very little in it, the owner said it was on E. they put 20 gallons in it for the test.... it's at the boat shop getting fixed up now. Hope that all it is...... thanks all for the input

The 268 is an excellent boat and I hope it all works out for you! If it test drives good after the repair and you're ready to move forward I highly recommend a compression test of the engine just to make sure you dont have any piston rings or vavle sticking, or damaged cylinder walls from it sitting for so long. Also keep an eye on those outdrive seals. Sometimes sitting unused is worse for a boat than a high hour engine that gets used constantly.

If you have any other 268 questions dont hesitate to ask, there is a lot of 268 experience on this forum. We just finished our 7th season and absolutley love ours. Welcome to the forum and good luck

Btw is it a Volvo penta or a Mercruiser?

Thank you for the info. Its the volvo Penta, that will be my first experience with that type of drive all my others were mercruiser.... Hoping the mechanic gets it straight today. We are very excited about this boat. with the low hours on the new motor and the good condition. we are going from a 19' runabout to something like this will be a huge change. Planning on putting it in a covered slip (on a hoist) in the local marina in the spring...

What we need is lawnmower reliability and indifference to abuse, I recently wanted to start a B&S 5.5 hp I/C engine after it hadn't been used for 5+years. The petrol had evaporated. Fresh fuel, 5 pushes of the primer bulb 2 pulls of the cord and it fired up and ran sweetly, Unbelievable.
