I can't comment on the dual D3 setup on the 288. The D3 is basically the marinised Volvo 5 cylinder D5 car engine, as you no doubt know. As such, filters etc are cheap. There were issues with the earlier D3 though, you might be better asking the questions on something like the UK MBY website; you'll access many more owners that way.
I have a 278 with a D4. Incredible performance and economy; it probably uses less than half the fuel my old 245 Sundowner/ 5.7GXi did and has a faster top end speed. I seem to spend more on parts than on fuel though.
