I thought I'd clean out the sump and noticed a slimy gelatinous black nastiness floating/coating the inside. I got most of with my hands and a paper towel but I had a thought. We usually flush out the shower quite well afterward but obviously it's not good enough. Would it be okay to pour a small amount of bleach down the drain in the head so that is sitting in the sump and not the gooey cultures that were growing in there? Would that have an adverse impact on the entire waste system?

Second, I noticed what looked like sawdust in the forward bilge. I have no idea where it could have come from. I vacuumed it out and wiped up the rest (some of it was moist) with a paper towel. Any thoughts as to what it was?

Here is a pic:

The sawdust might be from a hole drill for something during construction. Or any add-ons. It just eventually drifted down there. However, if it comes BACK, or it wasn't there before then I'd worry about carpenter ants, termites or something else chewing on the wood.

You're right about that nasty gunk in the sump, eeeeeew. You don't want to use too strong a concentration of bleach as it's not going to be all that friendly on all the hoses and surfaces. But a cup of it down the drain followed by a gallon or two of water shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you're not washing it right through the sump and overboard (assuming you don't have a gray tank).

Use some slimy grimy or Mr Clean. Just pour it in the shower drain
