Love my 238. Kids like being towed. I like stopping in the lake and just relaxing. My -one- complaint is that it doesn't go as fast as I'd like. Mine tops out at 38-40mph. Engine and outdrive were recently serviced. It is running well. Without turning it into a ridiculous racing engine, are there any things that can be done to speed it up? I did reprop it and that helped acceleration. But I'm not sure I'm going to get any more speed out of it. Thoughts? I know it isn't a speed boat... doesn't mean I don't want it to go a little faster! ;)

We had a 258 and it was a trade off between hole shot and top speed. Sounds like you re-propped for getting on plane faster. IMO, that was the best choice if you are doing any type of water sports. You can do the basics of reducing weight by carrying less stuff (not sure that's possible), less fresh water, less fuel and keeping your waste tank empty. Lastly, is the hull bottom painted? If you have growth, it will slow you down. I know there are many opinions as to which paint to use. Some are better than others for keeping a slick hull.

We decided ours was not a speed boat and I was happy a better hole shot and a top speed around 40mph.

Sell 238, and buy same vintage 278.

My 97 Vista 278 goes 49mph per GPS with twin 4.3 TBi engines.
