Unless you need to reuse special sized sheets, or fear getting 2" closer to the ceiling, you can go thinker. I replace our 6" mattress last year with an 8" memory foam mattress I bought online for very cheap and cut it down. Super comfortable. There are many options out there on Amazon.

Electric knife would be best if you have it but I just used new blade on a utility knife. Doesn't make great edges but they almost always supply a clothe "bag" you can fit the entire mattress in(just confirm when ordering). You never even see the foam unless you take it out of the bag to wash. The one we ordered had a nice clothe bag with a zipper and fabric on the bottom you would see on box springs. That black stuff I assume so the mattress can breath but not sure why its there.. Works great.
