Does the 5E generator in an 2001 have a fuel filter? I bought a maintenance kit for it and it had a filter in it? The manual does not show one, but the fuel pump inlet has a access door in the front lower left where the fuel line hooks to it. My filter in the kit is for hard threaded lines. My generator has a rubber fuel line feeding the pump? Should i add an inline filter to that line? Also does anyone know the specs on the studs that hold the top piece of the sound shield? Mine are gone and it was taped on. I will be fixing that. Thanks.

The generator does have in inline fuel filter:

Its strange that the operator manual doesn't show it but the service manual does. It's not labeled but you can see it in the bottom right corner in this diagram (last page).

Four Winns also installed a standard size external fuel/water separator for the incoming fuel line to my 298, which is probably a good idea since the Kohler filter is pretty small.

Thanks, so it must be where that 2 bolt access cover is. Hard to see standing on my head, but my 01 has just the rubber line going to what appears to be a fuel pump inlet. There is no filter there. Also where is your four winns installed one? Mine does not have one. Do you have a pic? I would like to add at least one.

The external filter is mounted to the fire wall, unfortunately I'm having difficulties posting a photo.

Luba, I'd be curious to what you find out about a fuel filter on your 2001 5E Kohler Generator. We also have a 5E in our 2001 328 Vista. I have looked a couple times for a fuel filter to change when changing the generators oil and I have not found the fuel filter. I wondered if our year didn't have a fuel filter, but that would seem odd. I probably should have found out about the genny fuel filter years ago.

The Kohler fuel filter should be right before the fuel pump. The service manual shows it in the link below.

I'd almost prefer to get rid of it and stick with the spin-on fuel fuel-water separator that Four Winns installed. The Kohler fuel filter is a big hassle to change out.

As soon as splash my boat I'll be calling a generator mechanic to take a look my 5E, I'll ask if this is good idea or not.

noexcuses - Thanks for that 5E link. Now I know where that fuel filter should be. It's been a slow start for us this season (Lake St. Clair) to start our boat spring prep work, but hopefully this coming weekend we can get down to our boat and get started. I'll plan to open up the genny sound shield and look for that fuel filter. I have "no excuses" for not changing it now. :)

If I rememeber correrctly the fuel filter is accessed througth the little panel with two screws on the bottom right hand corner. No need to remove sound shield, that small panel access is the reason that makes it difficult to change.

Yeah that is where i thought mine would be, but it is just the rubber fuel line going directly the what i think is the fuel pump. I think I am going to mount a water separator/fuel filter on the back wall if I have room. Does anyone have a part number for the later model one? I will see if I can find it online.

We will do some maintenance on the Kohler generator as well right after we finished installing the rack and tonneau cover for kayak mount on the truck. Got to order the maintenance kit first.
