has anyone tried to plumb the exhaust out, to keep the honda generator in the engine compartment? my eu2000 fits nice to store it there but i was thinking it would be better if all i had to do was open the hatch and pull the cord.

You would have lots of problems doing that. The first would be that the thruhull fittings are not meant to carry the amount of heat that an air cooled generator will generate in it's exhaust. Additionally, any portable generator is going to lack the appropriate safety mechanisms to deal with potential tipping issues. Also keep in mind everything in your engine compartment that requires cooling gets its cooling from the water, the generator has no facility for water cooling and will overheat quickly in the limited airflow of your engine compartment. Finally if you have any problems with the EU you've basically configured a conveniently placed bomb very close to your fuel supply. All in all not a pretty picture.

Sounds crazy, but a guy at my marina has one on his Chap that he has rigged in there. He has an insulated pipe from the exhaust that goes thru the vent on the side of the boat. He keeps a blower going while running the genny. I know a lot of people will say dont do it, but it has worked for this guy for three seasons now. He straps it down while its in there. Keeps it stored in there as well. Not sure about the fuel thing though. I thought about it, but dont have the room and really dont use it much anyway. An inverter with a few deep cycle batteries do the trick. I dont have a tv on board, dont believe in that, and really havent had to use the ac while on hook.

I strap mine down on the swim deck, the EU2000 is still small enough that you can easily get around it. I keep it centered and towards the storage compartment, exhaust is aimed out off the swimdeck. I used it this way last nov when night time temps were 32 deg F. and needed to run heater, next year when camping on beach, I will place gen set on beach away from boat.
This has worked very well for me.

I agree that it would be nice to have a built in gen set, but we have too small of a boat for that option. The little honda is the next best thing.

Do you have any closeups of your strap setup? I've been using Bungee cords and I am not real confident with them!

I think I am going to start storing my 2000i where the cooler goes. I am fairly sure it will sit right in that spot when not in use.
It's easy to strap the cooler on the platform or not take it at all (I usually just use the fridge anyway).

I really want to figure out a way to have this mounted somewhere that is safe and out of the way.

"What about with people boarding and unboarding while on the hook?" I don't know what "on the hook" is, at the dock maybe??? Well I can step over it, but it does take up room on the swim deck. When we take the jet skis with us, 5-6 gas cans go on back to camp spot.

Well, you can see what I have come up with, once we find a beach/camping spot I take it off the swim deck and run a cord out to it. In small photo in my sig. you can see generator up on rock 20-30 ft away from back of boat. Yep, need a bigger boat!!!

I mounted mine with battery box straps in the bilge, along with my magma grill next to it.

When we get to our destination, I take them both out and they both get strapped to the bow of the boat. magme on one side bow rail and the e2000 on the other side bow rail. Works quite nice. I have a small extention chord that plugs directly in the shorepower and have no excess, chord laying around. I also carry a 100' chord just in case I am in need of it!!!

These gens work great though!
