I have a 1998 258 and the depth sounder began malfunctioning last fall. The display unit on the dash goes blank on a regular but unpredictable basis. Could the problem be with the transducer? How would I go about determining the cause of the malfunction? Any help would be appreciated.

I am tempted to simply upgrade to a GPS chartplotter/fish finder combo unit but I would rather spend $ on gas.

Hi Steve,

The problem is likely the in-dash unit. I had to replace mine last year. If your transducer was bad the sounder would probably give zero or erratic readings, not go blank. I put a humminbird in-dash unit in and it works pretty good. I also have a Lowrance LCX-19C GPS/Plotter/Sonar unit so I added a transom-mount transducer that also has a temp sensor. The combination of both units comes in handy and gives a bit of fault tolerance...
