There are monitors that attach to the outside of the tank. They're more expensive, but you gain the advantage of never having to clean them again. Most tank systems are incompatible with each other. So if you replace the sensor in/on the tank you also have to replace the monitor panel on the wall. And sometimes you also have to pull new wire, but if the systems use the same number of wires you can just splice things as necessary.
I replaced my Xintex system with a SeaLand and it's worked ok this season. The xintex being the hollow column type (that ALWAYS gets clogged) and the sealand being the float type. I'm sure it'll get clogged eventually. But I plan on installing a Camco tank washer fitting at some point.
If your float system gets clogged you can usually clear it by dumping a bit of Pine Sol cleaner into the tank and filling it about 3/4" with water before going out on a lively trip through choppy water for about a half-hour. The soap along with the wave action is usually enough to loosen the gunk. Just make sure to pump out twice, once to empty it and again to get most of the soap out. Tedious, to be sure, but usually only something you have to do once a season.
