I have a 2006 278 vista with a 5.7 GXi Volvo Penta and a duo prop outdrive. I hit rocks in Lake Okeechobee and damaged the skeg and props. I took the props off but I am wondering if I can take off the lower unit without taking off the whole outdrive. I know on the older one's you couldn't because the shift linkage but I am hoping someone can tell me if I can on the dp and any other advise they may give me.

You might try an on-line maintenance manual site like:
http://www.boatinfo.no/lib/volvo/manual ... drive.html

This site does work on mylaptop, but not on my android tablet. It requires Adobe Flashplayer 9.

On the SX/ DPS the lower unit was just bolt on/ unbolt off. With the SXA/ DPSA I imagine it will be the same, the only changes compared to the earlier ones being the upper unit and transom shield assembly.

If it is a DP-SM, you should be able to remove the lower unit by removing the four bolts that attach it to the upper unit. All the shifting is done in the upper unit in this model. If it is just the skeg that is damaged you can do a temp repair with a skeg guard depending upon how much of the skeg has broken off. On the other hand, if the unit has a leak you may just as well have a new skeg weld on since this type repai would require remival of the lower unit seals anyway.
