I have a 288 with that same engine/prop (SX) configuration. Gets on plane quickly 2 V 8's at 270 hp each. Stays on plane at 2900 as well. Plenty of power for big water. It will hit almost 40 mph on flat water. Typical cruise is 20-25 mph. The 288 is a newer design than the 298. There has been talk on here in the past that the 298 is a wetter ride. One disadvantage of the 288 is no side decks, but that gives larger cabin volume. I would go with a boat with side decks next time--just to facilitate docking with two on board. But love my 288.
