Post subject:  Just bought a 248

Hello all,

I'm a newbie here. I just agreed to purchase a 2000 248V. This will be my first venture into a cruiser type boat, so thanks in advance for all of your help and knowledge when I ask.

The boat has the volvo 5.7 GS motor. My only concern is a carb vs. EFI motor. I've only ever had a EFI so what sort of things should I check out on the carb to see it's health?

Thanks!

Ohiolakerat, welcome to the board and congratulations on your new boat!
The 248 is a really nice boat, Im sure you will be happy with it. I cant really coment on the diff between the EFI and the Carby model except to say the carby model is probably not quite as smooth and fuel efficient as the injected model and maybe not quite as good to cold start but I dont think the differences would be huge. Will you get to use it before the season's over?
Cheers Robbi

Congrats! We need pics.

My last boat had a carb, and my current has an EFI. The only difference I've noticed is easier starting, although my carbed boat wasn't hard to start at all.

I will figure out how to post a picture shortly.

I'm hoping to get it sometime next week, so I should get a couple of weekends out of it before it gets too cold. Ohio weather is unpredictable.

I'm planing to tow the boat with a 07 Chevy Avalanche 4x4. I know I will probably be at the top end of my towing ability but I will only be towing a short distance (>10mi) with maybe 1 -2 long trips a year (~250mi). The truck is rated for 8200lbs and I will be adding a external transmission cooler. Do you think I will be alright?

Congratulations on your purchase and Welcome Aboard!

My last boat had a carb and it ran like a charm. A full throttle squirt into the carb and it would fire right up and idle nice and smooth. I would buy a can of spray-in carb cleaner and give it a good shot while underway and i would put a bottle of fuel injector/carb cleaner in the fuel tank for the rest of the season. If the carb is set up right you should be very happy.

Towing---> I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado 1/2 ton 2WD 4.8l that I pull my boat with. i figure with a full tank of gas the boat and trailer combo is near 8,000 lbs. I don't have any problems other than steep inclines (up or down). I would think you should be just fine. You will probably have to adjust your speed to suit the road and weather conditions. Oh yeah I also noticed that I use twice the gas I normally would for the same trip!

Congrats on the 248 you will LOVE it!

You should be ok on the towing as long as you treat your truck right.. Don't let it hunt for gears up hills, put it in tow/haul and get the tranny fluid/filter changed every 60K.

The 248 full of fluids on the FW trailer is actually about 9000..... (8900 give or take a few pounds of "stuff).

Congrads!! Our is a 2000 as well. We have the throtle body injection, starts a tad easier vs our old carb. For this heavy boat I miss the big block! Oh well, for a cruiser it does ok with the little 5.7. If the motor starts, then all is ok, carbs have been around for a very long time and will serve you well. One other thing, they shrink when put in water and grow when waxing.

As for towing, we have a '07 tahoe, it pulls it on flat land, but for the mountain terrain around here, the little 1/2 ton with small motor will not cut it for me.

Enjoy!!
