Remember the list of things we hated that our friends did when aboard our boats? Well I now have a list of things I don't like when receiving PM's. Don't just blurt out your question or comment without first introducing yourself. If someone is seeking my advice or is trying to gain info from me...the least they can do is introduce themselves and then ask what they want to ask. Agreed?

No not really. When you reply to a post it is to the board not to an individual as in a PM. Maybe I should have just called the topic PM conduct so as to not mislead anyone.

Hi, My name is Justin, and I too am a boataholic. In the event that I do ever ask a question, let this serve as the introduction.

I agree with you though... prelude the question with a 'who what when where' type of sentence, not a "What's the length of my shaft(prop, that is)" without first receiving an introduction.

I also agree that there is etiquette to follow when PMing someone. I don't have that issue here on these forums but on some of the car forums I go to, I can barely comprehend some of the PM's I get.

I agree. There are probably a few situations where a PM regarding something is valid.

I'm always glad to answer questions. I've gotten many of my own questions answered by reading the messages posted by others. This is something you don't get when using private messages. When you don't ask the question in a forum you lose the chance to have all the members be able to contribute their experiences. This also means the next person to come along with that question won't see the responses.

I've gotten my share of PMs like that over the years (and not just on this forum). Inevitably a response leads to other questions. If the question was asked in a forum the other members would be able to contribute their advice, or even call my advice into question (hey, it happens to all of us). The group as a whole benefits, as do the search results in google, live.com and the other engines.

At the very least, if you ask someone a PM that leads to solving your problem then try and summarize the results back to the forums eventually. That way YOU can get stuck getting the PMs. Heh.

I do disagree with you, this is a group that can ask anything and we all pitch in to help. We are not a high class, snooty Yacht club, and thats why I spent so much time hanging out on this 'board' because everyone makes me and my little canoe feel welcome.

The important part being GROUP. Ask the group, don't just hit up an individual member blind in a PM. I think that's the gist of what he's writing. As someone who's had that happen, I share the (slight) annoyance it sometimes brings.

I think one of the reasons for direct content PM’s without a proper introduction is the fact that people feel they know one another “personally” just from reading, corresponding and answering questions on the BB. It is that people feel a “kinship” to one another and forget that all we really know about one another is what each of us post. I have to agree to PM etiquette, it’s nice to know who we are talking too; remember something that seems harmless when you are typing may be construed as rude and not taken in the half hearted joking manor it was intended.

I think beachbob is correct. Some of us are very active in the forum and contribute in some sort of fashion, either by asking questions or providing answers or feedback. I would not expect someone who I have regularly interacted with in the group to introduce themselves on their first PM.


Now as for those that have a couple of posts at most and little to no interaction with I can definitely understand the expected courteous thing of an introduction. Just my $.02

I agree with the PM part of your conversation, but the title to this thread is "Board and PM Conduct"

Any one that is posting on the Board, has, or is very interested in a Four Winns boat. That is enough of a introduction for me to answer there post on a board.
I believe in etiquette, but do we really need to spell it out???? If we don't like someones etiquette, we can choose to NOT reply.

We all know who the pain in the butt members are........ If you don't, its probably you!
