Ok, I know this topic has been debated for years, but since I have been away from the site for the past 8 months, and am now coming back because my boating itch is turning into a full fledged rash right now, I figured I would bring it up again. I want a grill for the boat. I also want to be able to mount it on the aft of the boat so that I can grill from the swim platform. I would prefer a place that I can leave the grill while underway so it doesn't need to be stored. Has anyone found an efficient and effective way to accomplish this? |

When we had our cruiser we had a Magma and liked it a lot. I have not seen a permanently mounted grill on a boat our size. I think that would be the issue. I see them mainly on sailboats which would be a very soft ride. I had a rail mount that extended the grill either over the swim deck or off to the side of the boat. I would never have left it there for anything more than idol speed. |

Woggy, Welcome back! I had put my grill over the swim platform via a rod holder on the bar of the rear seat backrest. In short I hated it. When mounted the swim platform was unusable so i went to a different location, port/aft which works awesome for me. Check it out  with the rod portion in mount.

Walter, Where did you get the mount and pole kit? That's about what I am looking for. Also, did you leave the grill on while underway or did you always take it off? Where did you store it if you did take it off? |

Its a Magma mount..... here is the first link I found on google for it -> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018Y6SW6 If memory serves correct I paid 35 bucks for it. I tend to take it for several reasons. 1. People tend to use it as something to hold onto 2. When hot a problem with #1 3. Although sturdy to grill, in some of the chop, I am not confident the grill and mount are gonna make it. I have a plastic box that it fits in just perfectly and it slides under the rear seat out of the way. I keep the grill, rod and 7/16 wrench in there. I can have it set up under a min this way. |

Hey Woggy Here is a pic of our magma setup. Doesnt look like you would be able to do the exact same thing due the grabrail on the cushion. I leave ours on while underway, I have even trailered with it on but dont usually do that. I have used it with all but the aft canvas up. My only concern with it is, if somebody is sitting in the rear part of the wrap around, I am afraid they might some how touch it, or right after I am done, if someone walks past it and touches it. So Im am reeeaalll careful and make sure everyone is aware of the hot surfaces. Havent had any issues or anybody touching the hot grill except for me  Layed my hand on the top once to "see how warm it was" it wasnt warm, it was hot, ouch!  Is it boating season yet!!! Oh yeah, forgot to mention, you can kinda see it, starboard rear corner of the swim platform, I installed a table socket, and I have a small table that I use for my grill tools, spices, buns ect. Works great. The only thing is you have to be prepared to cut a 5" hole in the swim platform to do it.

I have thought about mounting that type of grill there myself. As you had mentioned, I am worried about the proximity of the grill to the vinyl. I wonder if I could somehow get some sort extenion that would lift it off of the vinyl. Hmmmm.... |

Here is a photo of our set up. Not as nice and clean as others that have posted, but no assembly required. This a magma grill along with one of there 1" bar mounts. I don't leave the propane bottle hooked up while under way, but have left the grill hanging off the side with absolutely no issues!

jsimon, that is a sweet setup and I love the name Simon sez! Its a shame they did not use fiberglass on the back rest on the 248 all they way to the top as they did with yours, if not I would do the same thing. The one thing that really burns me up that FW does with their boats is put the darn swim ladder on the opposite side of the door. If they would put both on the same side the swim platform would be more "usable" for the grill solution since it wouldn't necessarily be in the way. If anyone knows why they put it on opposite sides I would love to hear it. powellcrazy, do u barbecue drinks?

I just gave him the name and he did the rest. With the grill rail mounts, what I did is replaced the 3/8 nuts on the mounts with wingnuts, so I can take it one and off without any tools. I have pondered the same ladder question, the only think I can think of is that if someone was coming out of the cockpit door and someone up the ladder to the platform, there wouldnt be room for the traffic, the way it set up allows that to happen..... Idea for the grill, would it be possible to order another grabrail just like is on the rear seat and mount it above the current one to give suffcient clearance for the grill? Dont know how the seat is constructed, but it seems like it may be feasible..... just a thought |

Interesting comment about the swim ladder...cannot remember where the ladder was on our 288 but on the 318 they are on the same side as the cockpit entry...opposite of what you folks are saying...wonder if it is a "per model" design or full line switch? JB |

 We also use the Magma grill. I was concerned about grease and stuff with the gunnel mount so we opted for the stern rail on the swim platform that FW offered. We got the rod holders and grill mount. I wish now we would have gotten the table also. It would be a good place for the grill tools and beer. |

Ok, Grill update. I just purchased the Magma2 Kettle Grill Party Size. Hell of a deal at rivermarinesupply.com. Link Below http://www.rivermarinesupply.com/xcart/ ... Grill.html I am looking at mounting this on the transom on the port side above the cooler holding area using the following mount: http://www.magmaproducts.com/Products/M ... nsions.pdf Here is my dilema. I don't have the boat handy to look but maybe someone else would be able to help. Is there enough depth between the surface of the gunnel and the plastic insert that surrounds the cooler. Anyone else know what I am referring too? Here is a pic. I want to mount it above the cooler toward the aft of the boat.  I only need 1 7/8" depth but just wanted to make sure I had the room. Help is appreciated. |
