The paint that is on the mount for the table pole in the lounge seating of my 248 has basically flaked off. I would like to repaint it. Is there any recommended / special paint I should use here? |

Something heavy duty. If you like black --there's nothing like flat black High temp BBQ paint. That stuff is ROCK hard. |

Thanks cougar! That is what I originally was thinking. I want to do it in the same gray/silver it was originally in. Hopefully they have it in that color. |

The pole is painted? Most I've seen are just anodized aluminum. Or if they're covered it's powder coated, not regular paint. |

Bill, The pole is anodized aluminum. The mount plate is what lost its "paint". I don't know enough about powder coating but my neighbor said the same thing this morning that it is powder coated. |

I'm no paint or powder coating expert either. All I know is powder coating takes having a special sort of oven in order to 'bake' the coating onto the metal (aka not the wife's kitchen oven). I've no idea if it can be repaired, or why it would have flaked to begin with. I likewise don't know if you can mix putting paint on top of something that's already powder coated or not. But that'd be my first question. |

But that'd be my first question. I ended up finding a powder coating shop 5 mins from my house. I took the mount plus the collar of my steering wheel which was also had paint chipping off. The guy is going to sandblast and powder coat both parts for $40.00. I was thinking of hitting it with some strong heavy duty spray paint but the fact is that with the amount of water (in my case saltwater) that mount gets plus the abuse of that pole I would probably end up spray paiting it every 6 months or so. It is somewhat a pain to remove the mount b/c the heat shield on the engine hatch covers the nuts and washers that hold it in place. So with all that in mind I opted to do it right the first time although a bit more money. The process involves him sandblasting the parts clean. He then hangs them on a wire which is connected to ground. He then has a gun which is apparently charged with static electricity. He then sprays this powder which "sticks" to the metal because of the electrostatic charge. He then takes that and sticks it in an oven that gives it that "paint" look. I took some before pictures so I can show you guys later.... Stay tuned. |

Sounds like a pretty good deal! What color powdercoat are you going with? |

For the mount it is a color called granite... It is similar to the gray/silver there but with some specs of black and white in it. One of the reasons I went with that was b/c when he sandblasted a part of the mount he should me the material was a bit more porous b/c of the oxidation. Powder coating would not "fill in" the pores so the would be visible if u paid attention. The color he said would help in this. The steering wheel color will be black. Hopefully I will have them back tomorrow afternoon if not Thursday. |
