So, I've got my search down to what the 318 has installed - a 30 or so foot run of Acco anchor chain. It's stamped with G4 on it, and thus I believe it's the Grade 43 hot galvanized chain. Size is 1/4'' from what I have been able to find/tell thanks to the specs on the windlass. How do I find a pail of this stuff (134') for a reasonable price? Defender carries it by the foot.. but I know it's available by the pale. http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... 3&id=32561 |

Cougar, is this something you think you need in your waters? Long Island Sound has pretty wide variety of bottoms and with the 30' of chain, in three full seasons I have not had any issues with holding on our 318...wonder how much weight your adding to your bow. More specific to your question, I just received a new catalog from Consumers Marine...I had not heard of them and got the catalog out of the blue...it is showing only chain and rode combos in the book, but you could check their site...www.consumersmarine.com JB |

Getting an anchor to set solid in my local area is a major PIA. The successful workaround that most do is get an anchor set and have a crapload of chain to help keep the boat from tugging so hard on that anchor. Rope just doesn't settle to the bottom like chain does. I've had a ton of people all say the same "you'd be amazed what adding 100 feet of chain will do". In terms of weight - we're only adding less than 100 pounds to the bow. If that affects ANYTHING on my boat - I'd be worried. It's less than 100 pounds for the 134' pale per Acco. The 2nd reason is that the waters where I anchor are all 50-100 feet. So, I would need to add more rope to get a better angle anyways (I think they say 7/1 is ideal. In 100', I'd be lucky to be 2/1. So, if I am going to add anything, it's going to be chain. |

West Marine catslog claims to carry the full line of ACCO chain by the bucket but they do not list them out. You might want to pull up their website and maybe give them a call. |

To be sure you get the right chain, read "Ask Hank" on the link that JRCINNH posted. From what I'm reading there, Grade 43 will not work, but I've been wrong before. Check it out. Direct link to the FAQ: http://www.1st-chainsupply.com/FAQ/faq_windlass.html |

From what I understand (and reading my Windless manual) this is what Four Winns uses with the Maxwell Freedom 500 windlass. It's 1/4 inch hot dip galvy stamped with G4 on it - which is what the Acco chain I am looking at uses. Maxwell says a short link 1/4'' chain - which is what the Acco Grade 43 is? did I miss something? |

I think it's grade 40. I believe grade 43 refers to "transport" chain for load binders, logging, etc. I think the link sizes are different but the strength is the same. That "ask Hank" FAQ seems to be a good authority. I'd send Hank an email (it's the last one in the FAQ list). I'll bet he would know for sure. |
