Post subject:  when moving a boat across country

What steps if any should be done prior to the boat being put on a trailer? I am a real new boat owner and have to relocate with my 07 V258. I have no idea what must be done. What about the aluminum railing overhead?

Thanks in advance as I don't want to mess things up.

Raise your outdrive before you pull it out!
Remove your drain plug once out of the water.
Raise your outdrive before you pull it out!
Lower you antenna.
Wrap up your bimini top

are you going to do the drive yourself or are you hiring someone to do it?

There's nothing here to be scared of. Use common sense and you'll eventually arrive at your new destination.
Firstly, make sure you have a properly sized, serviced and bunk adjusted trailer. Have an appropriately sized and outfitted tow vehicle. Load the boat, lower everything you can down (remove the bimini and store in the cockpit), make sure and strap it down solidly to the trailer with ratchet straps front and rear (three points are built into the boat 2 on transom and one at the front where the winch will also be attached). No other straps should be required. As a precaution to help prevent road grime and damage from "sandblasting" you may want to have the boat shrinkwrapped all the way down to the water line. Check your lights and test the brakes in a few "panic" stop situations and you should be good to go!

Make sure you have a good bottle jack, breaker bar and the right sized socket plus I would recommend two spare tires. Don't expect to break any speed records and you will arrive at your destination witha safe and sound boat.

Good Luck!!

I highly recommend having the boat shrink wrapped.

If you do though, make sure you use a ton of chafe'ing tape to protect the fiberglass and all edges from the shrink wrap.
