Make sure you keep a fresh coat of wax on the name. The silver is actually a 2mil mylar. It really only has a 2 year warranty and the sun can be a killer on it. If left unwaxed, it will gradually delaminate. You do not want that.

Let me know if you need any tips for install. I used to own a sign company and did this kind of stuff thousands of times.

Ryan comes through in the clutch........Again!!! So you can document and not yet have the name/port done. I was curious about that.

The new boat documentation process does require that a name/hailing port be in display imediately.

I guess I broke that law. I still had to register with the state and pay sales tax -- 9% on six figures SUCKS A$$. But, I suppose the local authorities have been fine when they have seen my state registration stickers in the windows.

When you buy a new boat no documentation agency should mandate that graphics and lettering be on the boat immediately. That stuff takes time!

Doggg, what do you mean by delaminating? You mean coming off the boat? I had an issue a few boats back where my vinyl name started to peel.

No...not peeling off the boat. That silver mirrored vinyl is really a mylar. It is two one mil layers of polyester laminated to each other with a very thin layer of adhesive to create the mirror look. Delaminating would be when those two layers of polyester come apart. The adhesive and the top of the two layers is optically clear. UV rays will break down the adhesive and separate from the bottom layer. That is why I told CC to make sure and keep a very good coat of wax on it. Id he does not, there is nothing keeping those UV rays from braking down that adhesive.

Hope that helps. I now work for a company that makes plastics and vinyl for the signage industry. In fact...very good chance my company made the vinyl and mylar that is going on CC's boat.

It took me at least three weeks to get the name on also and I never got hasseled. It then took about 2 months to get the paper work from some place in Arkansas.

Metallic Silver isn't mylar based it's pigmented like any of the other base colors, the foilized chrome types like you are speaking of will delaminate, but what Cougar went with looks like a typical one layer silver.

Regardless of what it is, your advice to keep it waxed holds true for all vinyl, it will last longer if it's waxed!

thanks for the tips guys... I think brett is right on the silver I went with - it's not a foil - but it has that metallic/sparkle look to it in the light.

Regardless -- I'll keep her waxed. The admiral spends so much effort keeping the insides clean - the least I can do is keep the outside in great shape!

She's in covered moorage - so sun exposure is limited as well.

Question -- what's the best way to install that would avoid bubbling?

The nice part is - the way the graphics are laid out, I don't need to get them perfect straight against a level line or anything. Just square up side to side, make sure the orientation doesn't look weird - and go with it!

My general plan...

1) Clean the surface really good... Windex, alcohol pad, etc.
2) Cut as much of the graphic paper back as much as possible (except some tabs for tape to help with alignment)
3) Get positioned with tape - make some reference tape peices if needed.
4) Peel off the backing, align from top down and let her slide into place?
5) Hopefully no bubbles, but squeegee as needed.

The way I lay large vinyl is to pour some Windex into a small spray bottle and spray the entire area
where the vinyl will go and spray the backside of the vinyl with the backing removed. This way you can place the vinyl and slide it around if need be, then just squeegee the Windex out from between the vinyl and it will stick, then let it out in the sun and most if not all bubbles if you have any, will go away on their own.

This is the way to do it...only thing I do different is you can use just plain water if you like, or what I prefer a light mix of dish soap in water in a spray bottle.

Trust me on this!
