Post subject:  New day , new problem - Fresh Water Pump Issues

Hello all,

It seems that each day I have a new issue. This time it's the fresh water pump.

As I understand it, the fresh water pump is supposed to run when switched on until it builds up enough pressure. Then it should kick off until needed.

My pump seems to run and never shutoff no matter how long I let it run. I also never get much water to come out of any of the facets. Am I doing something wrong? I was thinking that maybe the angle of the boat is wrong because it's on the trailer so water wouldn't make it to the pump, but I can't see that being the problem with a full take of water just sitting there.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

As you say the pump should run when the water pressure drops, usually only when you open the faucet. It sounds like you may have a blocked filter which is situated just before the pump. This may also explain why you are only getting a trickle out of the faucets

or you have a leak and the water is going into the bilge

I don't appear to have a leak. I don't have any water in the bilge area. I will check the filter and see what I have there.

Might need to prime the system....

It sounds to me as if the pump is being starved of water, plugged filter or look up stream. If thats not a problem then, possible that the pump needs to be rebuilt???

How exactly do I prime the pump?

From my manual....

Open all faucets partially
Activate fresh water pump
Let pump run until water comes out of galley faucet, head faucet and transom shower

After all air is purged and a steady flow close 1 by 1 until pump builds up 35 psi....

Also while writing this I remembered there is a shut off valve right by the pump that could potentially be turned. Might want to take a look at that as well.

I second the suggestion to check the shut-off valve between the tank and the pump.

Who winterized it?

This past weekend was our first overnight on the boat. Our pump would come on every ten or so minutes for a few seconds and then shut off. I had plenty of pressure and checked for leaks. Then it dawned on me after crawling around the bilge looking for a leak. Oh yeah! I went to the swim platform and the transom shower and the faucet was in the on position. That causes the water to continually run even if the handle is not being depressed. Problem solved!

Moral of the story, check the obvious.

I just replaced my fresh water pump this past week. I was lucky in that it that it went with 1 week to go under waranty. My old pump would cycle on for a few seconds every so often. I thought nothing of it until, I installed the new pump. I saw the dripping leak around the fitting and that explained why it was running. I properly seated the fitting, the leak stopped, and the cycling stopped.

Looks like I will need to remove the pump. Maybe a dumb question, but is there a secret trick to getting the pipe connections off? All of my white connectors appear to be very tight, is there something I'm missing?

Thanks,

There are two tabs, one on each side of the pump which slides back and releases the pipe adapters from the pump. Disconnect there, the 4 screws and power to remove.

As an aside, I've found that anytime I need to work on something in the boat that the manufacturer's websites have PDF manuals online. I go so far as to take my laptop and cellular data card with me just for that purpose. Jabsco (pump), Shurflo (fixtures), Whale (pipe connectors), Rule (bilge pumps), Attwood (heater), etc, all have docs online for their products.
