This weekend we found that our Kohler generator, which was recently serviced, is putting out no power. It runs like a champ, but no juice. I hooked up the shore power and everything came on with no problems.

Polarity is good... All the DC systems are running fine... and, all the breakers appear to be in working order... any ideas what might be causing this problem?

thanks,

two things toe check, the transfer switch and the breaker on the generator itself.

i'll check it out... The transfer switch? Is that the same as the system 1&2 switch, which transfers power from shore power to generator?

And, where is the breaker on the generator? Do you have to remove the not too easy to remove cover?

thanks

Yeah is the switch in the right position? Here is a link to a Kohler 5kw generator, I believe that is the breaker on the right end of the unit towards the top. If you have a sound shield it may be under a small access panel, I am not familiar with the Kohler unit.

It is a white switch that looks like a breaker switch and it needs to be on in order for power to flow.

What a small world!! Our 99 298 is doing the same thing. The genny starts and runs like a champ, but absolutely no power to the panel. The white breaker switch has been tried in both positions. Can't find anything else to flip or try.

Our marina shop, Angler Marine, hopes to get a look at it this week. It worked fine at the end of last season. Two years ago, a similar issue did turn out to be the breaker switch in the wrong position.

I did think that the break switch feels kind of "limp" with no real authority to being flipped off, or back on. My money (LITERALLY!) is on the breaker switch!

Ditto on the switch on the generator. I have the same unit and it's a good guess that they tripped yours when they serviced the unit. Mine did trip once on it's own for no apparent reason. I'm thinking it might have been a spike when it shut down. I have had to reset my unit a couple of times when it showed a code on the display but that's not the problem with yours if your unit will run.

I can almost guarantee you it's the breaker on the genny itself. As others have said you'll need to open up your engine hatch and climb down by the genny. The breaker is clearly labeled and just flip it to on and you'll be all set. The funny thing about your post is that if happened to us two week ends ago. We were literally out in a cove with anchor down for our first cove out of the season and I couldn't get any juice to flow to the AC systems. Genny fired right up etc. We pulled anchor and went back to the dock. Bummer. The next morning I pulled the engine hatches and checked the genny and immediately saw that the breaker switch was off. We had some minor work done on the genny last fall and I'll bet our mechanic forgot to flip it back on. Live and learn!

Bill

Well, I checked and it WAS the breaker on the generator. What a nice surprise!

Thanks all for the tips! What a great site!
