For those of us that use a Honda eu2000 genset (or the Yamaha for that matter) on the swim platform,
the discussion of plug configuration, exposed energized components of male to male connections and possible
conflicts between shore power and the genset has been interesting and worrisome. I believe the issue of
electrocution may not be taken quite as seriously as carbon monoxide poisioning by some members (myself included)of this forum, and offer the following:
Does anyone have any experience with the automatic transfer switch made by Aims?
http://www.boatandrvaccessories.com/PWR3AXFER30.htmThis unit is only 4x9x7 inches, costs under $200 dollars and will prioritize between shore, genset and an inverter.
Wiring should be basic-
1. Route existing shore power wires from the panel to the input of the unit.
2. Add a twist lock marine receptacle (just like the shore power receptacle) at the swim platform genset location and wire to the input of the unit.
3. Route the output of the transfer switch to feed the panel at the old shore power location.
I have been unable to obtain an exact wiring diagram, but I would hope proper grounding has been addressed.
I have steps below my circuit breaker box with a void in them that the box will mount in- the existing wires input wires
from the shore and genset plug may even reach.
Currently, my shore power and genset receptacles are wired in parallel, which means that when the genset is on the
prongs of the shore power plug are hot, and if the genset were running and shore power were connected there would be
smoke, not to mention the exposed energized prongs (which are under a weatherproof cover- but a potential hazard).
Does anyone have any experience with this unit or this company? I would apprecitate any input/ comments/ suggestions
before I order it-
It appears that this could make the transfer/ dead short/ exposed energized component a non issue and idiot proof
the system for a pretty low cost. As I often mistakenly act like an idiot, I can use all the help I can get.
Thanks in advance,
Wags
