Gents,

I spent a great deal of time last night investigating the plumbing mysteries in my "new" (2003) 248. Here's what I found:

I posted yesterday that I was confused as to why I have 2 "WATER" steel caps on the starboard rear of the boat rather than just one. According to the manual, I should have 2 "WASTE" caps. One gray water and one black water. After pulling the system apart, here's what the previous owner(s) have done:

The sink in the galley and the head no longer dump into the sump. They are plumbed/routed to discharge directly out of the hull. The shower still dumps into the sump which is also routed to dump directly overboard. The A/C condensate line has it's own hose now that dumps directly into the bilge, not the sump. This is all good and bad, I think. Good in that I don't have to worry about the sump pump giving out on me and ruining my weekend, since we don't use the shower. Bad in that I think this setup might be illegal on some lakes.

It appears to me that the gray water tank is *completely* bypassed and unused. It has 1/2 tank full of anti-freeze that I will have to pump out, I guess. I am also guessing that the previous owner(s) used this as an additional fresh water tank since the steel cap says "WATER".

I have not been running the A/C the last few days trying to figure out where an accumulation of bilge water is coming from. I am still getting water from somewhere, but still looking.

Any ideas/comments?

Craig C.

The water you discovered and in the bilge I am assume is in the area where the sump pump is. I had this issue too. You can see the full history in this thread---> viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2897&st=0&sk=t&sd=a That water apparently shows up for various reasons on all of the cruisers. My guess it can come from various places. The biggest issue I see is that it has no where to drain. What I did was use a wet vac and get it all out in that matter. Then I cleaned up the mess that was left over with clorox clean up.

Are you sure your second water tank is not being used by your head to pull water when in the wet position?

I wish I could tell you ... I can't get the toilet to prime.

Curious ... there is a through hull metal pipe in the bilge on the port side near the bilge pump, just in front of the engine. Has a wire of some kind coming out of it and appears to have a green waxy substance inside. Is this a seacock? If so ... is it the toilet seacock? If not ... what in the hell is it? Makes me nervous to see a pipe going through the hull ...

I believe that is your overboard discharge sea cock you are talking about. There are 2 seacocks I know of in there, one is the overboard discharge and the other is to bring up water to the A/C unit. Does it have a white hose connected to it?

What is the color of the wire? Green?

There is no hose connected. It's just a two inch high fitting with a black wire coming out of it. I know where the A/C seacock is ... rear bilge, port side.

This piece I'm talking about is port side, between the engine and the fuel tank, about 12"-18" from the bilge pump (underneath the engine water pump).

Should I be nervous that there is no hose plugged into it?

Oh ... can't tell the wire color ... looks black and goes somewhere underneath the engine towards starboard. I haven't traced it yet.

The overboard discharge is right next to the A/C sea cock on mine. Sounds to me like it is the depth sounder transducer your talking about.

Could be. That's a relief. I'll take a picture tonight and post it.

Your expertise and input are appreciated.

Take some pictures so we can see what you are talking about. If it is a sea cock the wire is a bonding wire, if there is no hose connected to it they have done some funky re-plumbing. All the more reason to get a full and complete survey before buying any cruiser.

I meant to do that last night. I'll get one tonight and post it.
