Post subject:  Finally got the Magma mounted on the platform rail!
It took weeks for Magma to finally send me these custom mounts... the tough part is that they are 1 7/8 in diameter, but the rail is 1 5/5. I used some high density foam stuff (think the rolls of non-skid stuff you can buy).

So, I finally got out to the boat to remove the rail and bring it home... Picked up some hardware and went at it...

The Magma Newport is the grill I picked. 9 X 12 cooking surface and no fancy warming racks for me to work around. Just the basics.

The mount is new and is a modified wakeboard tower mount that Magmastarted working with. They look great and will hopefully hold up well!

Here is the rough fit of the mounts and the bbq. It has taken 60 days between the mounts and the bbq. This is the second bbq because the first was damaged in shipment. The mounts - Magma makes them 'on demand'. They are not a stocked part.

I lined everything up... made some measurements, and got the mounts installed. The foam compressed a heck of alot. The mounts are sturdy, but the forward/backward movement is not resolved.

Here's the 'CougarCruiser custom fabrication'. I've mocked up a post that runs through the middle hole of the swim platform rail and drilled a new hole in the Magma mounting plate. I bought 3.5/4/4.5/and 5 inch 3/8's bolts not knowing which length I would need. Turns out I need a 3 inch. Nice. I washered up the 3.5s as a temp and will swap it all out once I try things as it and am happy with it. The major tough part was the bolt came from the underside and you cannot have much protrusion into the mounting plate - otherwise the drip tray doesn't fit. Thanks lock washer and thin nut. We'll see how this holds.

Nice work!! I was finally able to track down a FW grill mount for the magma. I gave up on the one my dealer ordered. He even ordered it directly from the mfg. who makes it for FW but it still hadn't shown up. I called every dealer I could and G&R happened to have one that a customer never picked up. $147.50 later and it's here. It is pretty well made though. The hamburgers better taste good this weekend!!!

Hamburgers are not the ideal food to cook on the boat because of the grease. The boat grills generally aren't tall enough and don't get hot enough to do as good a job vaporizing the drippings. Your home gas grill gets a lot hotter and has more space to do a better job of it. When it drips onto the fiberglass you need to use a degreaser to get it all off. This also takes off the wax. I prefer not to have more work created for me.

I find it's better to cook a couple of NY strip steaks instead. A pair of them along with two ears of corn on the cob fit perfectly. I marinate them in a ziploc bag, usually with a mix of soy, worchestershire, teriyaki sauces and rice wine vinegar.

Got a chance to give out the new BBQ a try yesterday.... Cooks up some chicken ka-bobs pretty darn well. Grill doesn't get as hot as the home grill does, but it does the trick.

It's everything we need for our boating adventures...

Yep, it will stay permanently attached. So far so good with choppy water. The center post really keeps it from moving around much

Cougar; the grill looks great the mounting looks solid as heck. I couldn't decide if I wanted it perminently mounted or not so for the time being I use the stern rail rod holder option and mount the grill off of that. Yours looks cooler then my way.

The biggest issue with permanent vs not permanent is storage of the newport. There just isn't anyplace on the 318 that's good for storing that bbq. Transom locker maybe, but I have plans to store a little 2hp outboard in there.

I thought hard about the FW rail mount and the classic, round Magama grill. I've had those for years on my other boats and just wanted something different.

Agreed. I let mine cool then put a tall kitchen garbage bag on it. That way it'll catch any grease likely to leak. I then stuff it into a medium sized duffel bag I picked up at REI. There's enough room in there for the pole, shelf attachment and a couple of gas bottles. Then I just stow it in the cabin below. For as big as these boats are they sure lack effective storage areas for stuff like this. This is true for most powerboats, unfortunately.
